changes to Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva

Hi, you made changes to a page I keep up to date. Thanks for that. One of the comments you made is "couldn't find any sources on 2021 national championship controversy" Here's a link to some documents related to this controversy. https://www.gymnasticsethicsfoundation.org/_files/ugd/992b6c_47662b7b93e747dcaa81939f7585f11d.pdf Also there's newspaper articles related to this: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/aug/03/kitty-chiller-appointed-to-key-sports-integrity-role-while-still-under-international-sanction https://www.smh.com.au/sport/national-sports-tribunal-deputy-sanctioned-for-false-statement-20230314-p5cs2b.html https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/jun/16/aoc-executive-kitty-chiller-sanctioned-for-judging-irregularities-at-olympics-qualifier https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-06-15/kitty-chiller-national-sports-tribunal-gymnastics-australia/101155200

In brief at the 2021 national championship that doubled as continentals and Olympic qualifier, 2 judges without adequate qualification self nominated to the jury (the highest roles on judging panel. During the event this jury deliberately overruled score given by top qualifying judges and increased the score of the gymnast who was ranking second by unprecedented amount (three times more than maximum ever seen at international competitions). This way changing ranking - making #2 to take the first spot, win nationals, continentals and gain olympic spot. Gymnastics Australia backed that action, however when the matter was investigated by Gymnastics Ethics Foundation and Sports Integrity Australia both investigations found competition manipulation and breaches to codes of ethics and codes of behaviour. 5 parties (Gymnastics Australia, Oceania Gymnastics Union, CEO of gymnastics Australia and 2 judges) were found guilty and received sanctions. However this cannot return Alexandra her missed Olympic Games spot. ToxicVictory (talk) 13:00, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I had heard about the problems with the 2021 Oceania Championships (and left it on her page in that context), but I missed that it doubled as the national championship that year, so I ended up trying to search for a second event with judging problems. I appreciate the links and explanation! FloweringDagwood (talk) 21:12, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Austrian Figure Skating Championships

edit

Thank you for adding sources to this article. Are you Austrian? I'm looking at, for example, the 1901 source and it doesn't seem to indicate the medalists. I don't know who filled in the tables, but what we need is verification as to who won what and when. Bgsu98 (Talk) 04:11, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Thanks for checking the sources; I speak a little bit of German but am not Austrian, so although I tried to be careful when searching, it's possible I misunderstood something. For the 1901 source, they didn't put it into a table, but the text says starting at the bottom of the middle column: "In Lemberg fanden am vergangenen Sonntag gross Wettlaufen statt, bei denen auch die Meisterschaften Oesterreichischen Eislauf-Verbandes zum Austrag kamen. [...] Die Concurrenzen zeitigten die nachgolgenden Resultate: Meisterschaf im Kunstlaufen: Max Bohatsch [score] Steiner [smaller score]" which seemed to be the announcement of the medalists for that year.
I also just tried googling one of the references listed on the bottom of the page (Eiskunstlauf von A bis Z) and found a scan that might be useful; it contains a listing of competition results, with Nationals starting on page 196. Interestingly, it doesn't mention the 1906 competition, which I also couldn't find any record of in the Anno archive. FloweringDagwood (talk) 05:51, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wie schön! Ich bin Deutschlehrer in den USA. The A bis Z provided the results and host cities through 1955, so I have audited the tables. Unfortunately, for the paired events, it only lists the skaters' last names, so if we can find further sourcing during a normal search that would also provide first names, that would be great!
I went to Nationals this weekend, flew back late Sunday night, and then about midday on Monday, I got hit with what I'm guessing is some kind of flu. Today was the first day since then that I could actually get myself upright. I watched the women's event from the European Championships; it was pretty good! Bgsu98 (Talk) 20:57, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Your German will be much better than mine, then :) Thanks for checking it against the table! I can see if the Anno archives have full names for the pairs in earlier years. I haven't had much luck yet finding sources covering the gap between the 50s and the late 90s; Skating magazine sometimes included Austria in its roundup of foreign results during that time period, but some years they only mentioned the winners, and they usually didn't include the location. I did find the Eissport Magazin online archive has at least the 1995 results (haven't looked through it all yet) and some results for the Swiss and Dutch championships as well.
Exciting that you were able to see Nationals in person - hopefully it was a good time (other than the flu)! I also enjoyed the women today - it's going to be fun to see who medals with the top places essentially tied going into the free. FloweringDagwood (talk) 01:49, 30 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

2025 World Championships

edit

I know we do not have any photos for Gabriel Folkesson (Sweden) or Aleksandr Vlasenko (Hungary). If I have time tomorrow morning, I'll see if I can compile a list of who's competing this week that we don't have a single photo of. Thank you for your help! Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:53, 26 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I took a couple of Vlasenko today already at one of the practice sessions, but I'd like to take at least one better one during the competition. (Hopefully your Worlds is off to a better start than mine - mine began with getting changed to a new section because the original seat had a lovely view of the camera crane blocking the skaters. Was nice to see some practices once that was taken care of, though!) FloweringDagwood (talk) 02:51, 26 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I almost forgot... the U.S. pairs team who won Nationals this year – Efimova and whoever – we definitely need a photo of the two of them in performance. The photos we have are trash. Bgsu98 (Talk) 22:20, 26 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm not at the best angle for pairs, but I got one during their SP that showed both their faces and looked decent in the camera, so I think we will be able to update their photos. FloweringDagwood (talk) 14:58, 27 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
There's a lot of new skaters here so definitely be sure to get pics of anyone who's new. I'm at the event too but only have a lowly phone for pics. Jasper Deng (talk) 17:09, 27 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Figure skating photos

edit

Good Morning! I hope you had a great time at Worlds! I'm sure going through all of your photos is an undertaking, but when you have a chance, these are the skaters whose photos I would really appreciate as they are current medalists. If you happened to photograph any of them and have a good quality of them on the ice (in costume), that would be super appreciated!

Thank you so much! Bgsu98 (Talk) 13:05, 29 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reminder! I've processed most of the women's and men's event photos, but I've gotten a bit sidetracked by expanding articles for the European destubathon happening this month. I'll finish those up and get the metadata on them in the next couple of days so they can be uploaded, and then I'll work on the dance/pairs. When I was doing the initial sorting, it did look like I got at least one usable photo of everyone at senior Worlds and usually at least one during their performance. Hope you had a great time there as well! FloweringDagwood (talk) 15:12, 29 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

You are invited to participate in The World Destubathon. It's currently planned for June 16-July 13, partly due to me having hayfever during that period and not wanting to run it throughout July or August in the hotter summer and will be run then unless multiple editors object. There is currently $3338 going into it, with $500 the top prize. As 250 countries and entities is too much to patrol, entries will be by user, but there is $500 going into prizes for editors covering the most countries. Sign up if interested! ♦ Dr. Blofeld

Commentator images

edit

FD, I've already thanked you via the bot, but I thought I'd come here and personally thank you for adding those great images to the figure skating commentators' bios. All three bios suffer from a lack of images, anyway (especially Gannon's), so they're a significant contribution.

I'm planning on attending the U.S. Nationals in Jan. in Kansas City, and will take pictures there, even though I'm the worst photographer. If you're going, perhaps that can be our project while we're there. I know that lots of pictures were taken at Worlds in Boston last year (sooo bummed I wasn't able to go), so perhaps we can do something a bit more formally, through the Figure Skating project. I figure, can't go to the Olympics, but Nationals will be better anyway, since we're in the heyday of great American skaters. Thanks again! Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:11, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Aw, thank you! Glad to help fill in photos where they're missing.
Unfortunately, it looks like the timing of US nationals probably won't work for me this season, as great as it would be to make a more formal photography project of it together. Maybe another year! (I ended up going for Skate America tickets instead.) But I hope you enjoy attending - no doubt there will be some great skating to watch! - and good luck with taking your photos. Although I'm not a professional myself, please let me know if I can be of any help by sharing some of my processes for organizing competition uploads or anything like that. Japan Figure Skating Championships

edit

Thank you for fixing those names on the Japan article. I did my best, but I am at a total loss with the Japanese language. Sources indicate the Japanese championships were first held in 1920. Anything you can do to find those earliest results would be great; it would be great to have the full results. Bgsu98 (Talk) 03:59, 22 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

No worries, I know figuring out how Japanese names should be transcribed can be difficult. I have been trying to find better sources for the earliest years of the championships and Japanese skating history, and I've been coming up at somewhat at a loss so far. I found one saying that Inada won the first senior women's championships at the 6th edition of the tournament (1934/35), hence why she was selected for the Olympics, but nothing at all that mentions the other medalists. There are a couple of PDFs of old JSF record books linked on the Japanese wiki page that I have poked through, and those have the official men's competition starting, as the page currently states, in 1930, with intercollegiate competitions starting earlier, in 1925, and the official women's competition starting in 1935/36. (The jawiki page also has a citation to another book saying that the first "All-Japan" skating competition in the country was held in 1922, even though it doesn't seem to be counted as such by JSF until they added speed skating and hockey.) So it's all a little confusing! I'm trying to see if there is an accessible book source or something I might be able to get my hands on, and when I have time, I also plan to take a closer look at the PDFs, since they have essays as well. 1976 Austrian Championships

edit

The 1976 Austrian Championships for single skating were held the weekend of December 6-8, 1975, in Innsbruck, but the Salzburger Nachrichten archive is missing the issue dated December 8, and the issues for the next few days do not list the results, so if you have any thoughts on tracking down those particular results, let me know! Bgsu98 (Talk) 17:17, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I was able to find the 1976 results for singles in the Arbeiter-Zeitung archives. Other ones I see that are still missing from the table: 1988 singles, 1983 dance (Müksch's first name was Monika, no luck finding them for the Reichels), and 1952 dance; I couldn't find the 1988 dance results. FloweringDagwood (talk) 23:27, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
The 1988 Championships took place on December 7-8, 1987, and of course the December 8 issue is missing... Bgsu98 (Talk) 23:53, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
One more source that might be useful, in case you haven't already seen it - Skate Austria has their own archived list of junior and senior medalists back to 1991. If that works as a source, I think that just leaves dance in 1988. FloweringDagwood (talk) 01:52, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Nein, I sure had not seen that before. That just leaves 1988. Bgsu98 (Talk) 02:42, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I just need three years for Poland, three for Slovakia, two for Slovenia, one for Austria… a handful for the Soviet Union. On the plus side, I did finish up Germany and Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Romania, France, Russia, and the Netherlands! 😃 Bgsu98 (Talk) 03:25, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
These are the years I still need in case you have thoughts on additional sources:
  • Poland (1991, 1992, 2002)
  • Slovakia (1998, 1999, 2000)
  • Austria (1988)
  • Slovenia (1994, 1995)
Bgsu98 (Talk) 14:26, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
For a first pass, I found Poland 2002 on an archived version of the federation site (and a link to their full results history... that was a 404 at time of capture, sigh.) The Slovak federation seems to have some missing place names. (Archives also have results including junior Nations back to 2002 if you wanted to add those.) Archive of the Slovenian fed's website has results back to 1985. I will take a stab at the rest later. If we really can't find anything else online, we might be able to try offline archives or asking around for sources (Matthias Hampe comes to mind for Austria; have also seen some Austrian newspapers in US collections we could ask about).
By the way, I have tried to find more about the earliest Japanese nationals and have kind of hit a wall with that for the moment. At this point, I think newspaper archives are probably the best bet, but they're difficult to access outside of Japan without an institutional subscription, so I'm still trying to figure out how I might be able to get at them. FloweringDagwood (talk) 16:34, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I am missing the cities for two of those Slovak Championships. We don't include Slovak results from when it was part of Czechoslovakia. Same with Slovenia when it was part of Yugoslavia. I set the start years for the Slovenian and Croatian Championships to account for their independence from Yugoslavia. Bgsu98 (Talk) 17:50, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am having trouble finding suitable newspaper archives for Italy, Australia, and New Zealand. Finland, Denmark, and Spain appear to be locked behind a copyright wall and are inaccessible outside of those countries if they are within a certain time frame from the present. Bgsu98 (Talk) 19:30, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ryan Stevens seems to have done a trawl through news and magazine archives for the Australian, NZ, and Finnish nationals (I see he did Poland as well) - while it is a blog, since his site is noted as a RS on the wikiproject's style guide and he gives the sources drawn from for each list, I thought I would mention it.
For Finland, I also found a book called "Tähtiä jäällä: tarinoita taitoluistelusta". It's hard to tell what exactly it contains, so it may just focus on famous skaters and not have a national result list, but there's a library that has it a couple of hours from me. I can put in an ILL request for it, if it might be helpful.
Would a VPN help for the databases inaccessible outside their countries, or do they block those? FloweringDagwood (talk) 23:18, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have actually cannibalized those charts in the past, but I do not consider it official until I can view the source personally. I have found too many discrepancies with newspaper sources that I have retrieved. I didn't realize he had done Finland, so I updated the Finnish article; it's a good place to start and provides names to search for, but I just don't trust it until I see the source in front of me. Like, with Norway and Poland, I found newspaper records for each of those competitions prior to when FS Corner/Tracings/Rink Results/Skating Scores kick in. Even the Finland article, where I had sourced results for most of the early competitions, had discrepancies with what he has listed. I trust my results. Bgsu98 (Talk) 14:59, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I ran into a bit of a snag with the Finnish championship results for the men's competition in 1997 and wasn't sure how to best edit the table. The only results I found for the men were after the short program, not the final results, and that states that only Kalliomäki and Honkanen competed (and were in that order after the SP) and not Leminen, who the table currently shows as the winner. The Skating Finland website lists Leminen as the champion that year, so that doesn't help solve the puzzle. FloweringDagwood (talk) 20:26, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I was not aware of that Finnish site. I don't see a comparable list for pairs and dance? Bgsu98 (Talk) 23:48, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Their list of pair champions is here and the list for dance is here. And one for synchro champions as well. FloweringDagwood (talk) 23:57, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Were you able to create an account at Helsingin Sanomat? It seems to want a Finnish mailing address, since it won't accept my U.S. postal code. Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:22, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Never mind... I just entered the address for Skate Finland. ;) Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:26, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Based on this, Markus Leminen was not the 1997 Finnish champion, so I have adjusted the chart. Bgsu98 (Talk) 02:17, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
User:FloweringDagwood: I see you've had a lot of luck with the Finnish results, which is great! If you are interested, we are just missing 1969–1971 at Nebelhorn Trophy. Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:03, 31 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
No luck with those ones so far, just a couple of references to someone winning the competition earlier than 1969 (NYT article from 1964, Skating magazine from 1965). FloweringDagwood (talk) 16:53, 2 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Are we sure 1969 was the start date or did whoever put that chart together originally just pull the year out of his behind? Bgsu98 (Talk) 16:59, 2 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I would guess that someone looked at the German fed's archive of the event winners, saw the list started in 1969, and assumed that was when the event began as well. But it does seem that it was at least held in April 64 and 65 before then. FloweringDagwood (talk) 17:17, 2 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
On a happier note, I finished the Soviet Union article last night! Bgsu98 (Talk) 17:21, 2 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
According to this article, the Nebelhorn Trophy celebrated its 30th anniversary in 1998, so I’m going to set 1968 as its start year. Bgsu98 (Talk) 03:03, 3 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Finnish Figure Skating Championships

edit

I've found some more results for the Finnish Championships, leaving only two years unaccounted for: 1987 and 1990. The championships for 1990 began on December 10, 1989, but there were no follow-up articles in the next few issues that I searched. I can find absolutely nothing about the 1987 competition. Bgsu98 (Talk) 13:13, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good work! I'll take another stab at finding anything for those two years when I have a chance. FloweringDagwood (talk) 16:05, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
The 1987 championships (I have to imagine it was held) would have been in either December 1986 or January 1987. Bgsu98 (Talk) 16:40, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Great news! I posted a request for help at the Finnish Wikipedia and an editor in Finland was able to find the results for the last two years we needed to complete these results! I did the same thing at the German Wikipedia and got what we needed to complete the results for the Nebelhorn Trophy. Lastly, I was able to complete the tables for the Slovak Figure Skating Championships; the articles I needed, but couldn't access because they are locked by copyright, are actually available to anyone in the EU, which right now includes me, since I am in Prague for Worlds. I am currently missing just the pairs results for the 1974 Golden Spin of Zagreb; there doesn't seem to be a source request forum at the Croatian Wikipedia.

The two countries that are giving me the biggest headaches: Italy and Australia. Australia has plenty of sources available, but there didn't seem to be a lot of consistent coverage of national figure skating in the press. The reverse is the case for Italy: lots of reliable press coverage, but a lack of available newspaper archives on-line. Bgsu98 (Talk) 19:24, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

That's awesome! I'm glad they were helpful in finding those last few sources for those pages. Unfortunately, I ran into the same issue when I tried looking through Australian newspaper archives. Might see if I can dig up anything for Italy after Worlds. (I also made the trip to Prague to watch - hope you're enjoying the skating here!) FloweringDagwood (talk) 21:10, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I skipped out on the pairs event tonight to go to downtown Prague. Worlds was really just an excuse to come here, but I will for sure attend both men's events and both dance events. Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:36, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Fournier Beaudry & Cizeron

edit

I hope you had a great time at Worlds! I just flew back today... I extended my trip via Vienna and Cologne.

One couple whose photo(s) we need badly are Laurence Fournier Beaudry & Guillaume Cizeron. My personal feelings for them aside, they have a prominent presence on numerous articles and we have no decent photos of them performing on the ice. If you could move them to the front of the line when you get started, it would be appreciated! Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:25, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I had a fun time, hope you did as well!
Some bad news about photos... despite the venue and event sites both saying that only professional cameras were banned, in practice, they disallowed all cameras that were not attached to a phone (I was told this was the real venue policy at the info desk after being yelled at by security - very unhappy about that whole situation). I did take a few photos with my phone in RAW mode that might be acceptable to use til we get better ones, but I didn't think to try to get one of FB/C, only early group skaters I knew didn't have one. However, I've been told that WikiPortraits did have a photographer there; not sure which events they covered, but I try to track new skating photos on Commons, so if they don't add their photos to articles themselves, I can help do so. (I've now joined WikiPortraits myself and will try to get credentials for some future competitions.) FloweringDagwood (talk) 22:16, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Destubathon of the Americas

edit

You are invited to participate in the Destubathon of the Americas, a contest/editathon which will run from May 1 to May 31. The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible. A good chance to have fun in expanding many of our old stale stubs and win up to £2000 ($2680) in Amazon vouchers for expanding stub articles. Sign up in the Contestants/participants section on the contest page if interested. Even if not interested in prizes you are still warmly welcome to participate in it as an editathon! Hopefully we can achieve something significant in the month of May together! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:57, 15 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
