FAC
Hi Dwaipayan, Sorry, I somehow did not notice your post on my talk page, buried as it quickly became by other posts. Glad to hear the article is at FAC. Will take a look at it and provide feedback. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 12:31, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hi there, I did take a look at the article. There are two issues with it. Its scope is not clearly delineated, and it is too short for an FA.
- I feel that the "Independence day" article should mainly be about the day, about the history of the day (i.e. how the day came to be picked), about how the day is celebrated in different parts of the country, and about customs around those celebrations that have taken root during the last 60 years, not about the history of the independence movement. Please see Independence Day (United States). The "background" section there is chiefly about how July 4 came to be picked for the declaration.
- The article is too short for an FA. It needs to be developed more. That will take time. In any case, if the goal was for it to become an FA by August 15, that is unlikely to happen, as the FAC process for successful FAs is usually long drawn out. If you'd like I can say these things on the FAC page itself, but I thought I'd leave my two cents here first. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 11:14, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Requested move
I have been preparing a "requested move". (ya, it sounds funny, but, sometimes I need lots of preparation before requesting a move.) I have not posted it still, please give me initial comments
- Requested move Pather Panchali → Pather Panchali (film)
This is one of the most sensitive requested move I have ever done (read disclaimer below). And I think some people will discard the request at once. But, still I request to read my rationales below at least:
- Both the novel and the film have same title. The novel was published in 1929 and the film released in 1955.
- There have been lots of debates over the question– which is more valuable as an art work– the film or the novel! Bangladeshi author and scholar Humayun Azad told–[α]
| “ | if Satyajit Ray (film director) is regarded as pride of India Bharat Ratna, then Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay (novelist) is definitely pride of world, pride of civilisation, but unfortunately no one knows superior Bibhutibhushan, but everyone knows inferior Ray. In comparison to the standard of the novel, the film is miserable.... | ” |
Since this is a sensitive comment, I'll quote the original Bengali lines too–
I can present few more comments where scholars and critics have felt the novel is greater than the film.
- Suggestion: The only thing I want to highlight– both the novel and the film are considered as classics, so, I suggest to make this title Pather Panchali a disambiguation page with link to 1) Pather Panchali (film) 2) Pather Panchali (novel).
Disclaimer: I can understand this may start a controversy which I'll try my best to avoid. Personally I do not have any opinion about this comment of Azad or any negative comment made on Ray's film.
In search of perfection,
--Tito Dutta ✉ 18:58, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

- Benefits
- Those files are being saved in your Google Drive account automatically. You can group in folders in your Google drive account.
- You can share those files directly from your Google Drive account, you don’t need to re-upload files to share with others. (but don't share the link in public places like Facebook, Google Plus)
- There is no advertisement, trap ads, pop-up ads, misleading/confusing download links there.
- There is no limit or restriction of download count or parallel download.
- People can choose their own file type and convert the file before downloading.
- The book can be read online too.
- Problem
- There is no clear download link in the file sometimes, the best way is to tell someone that click on File→ Download! --Tito Dutta ✉ 17:31, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

- Op-ed: The Athena Project: being bold
At this year's Wikimania, I [Brandon Harris] gave a talk entitled The Athena Project: Wikipedia in 2015. The talk broadly outlined several ideas the foundation is exploring for planned features, user interface changes, and workflow improvements. We expect that many of these changes will be welcomed, while others will be controversial. During the question-and-answer period, I was asked whether people should think of Athena as a skin, a project, or something else. I responded, "You should think of Athena as a kick in the head" – because that's exactly what it's supposed to be: a radical and bold re-examination of some of our sacred cows when it comes to the interface.

- Can I suggest a few changes to your recent edits:
- essence of oneself → essence of self (as it represents individual consciousness not the Self or Atman)
- In "Bhagavad Gita also emphasises", you removed "also". It is necessary because the Gita upholds both Upanishadic monism and dualism/theism.
- The citation is not needed as the next citation (Fowler|2012|page=xliii-iv) covers all the previous sentences in the section.
- I can go ahead and make the changes if you agree. CorrectKnowledge (talk) 15:24, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

- Op-ed: Small Wikipedias' burden
In a certain way, writing Wikipedia is the same everywhere, in every language or culture. You have to stick to the facts, aiming for the most objective way of describing them, including everything relevant and leaving out all the everyday trivia that is not really necessary to understand the context. You have to use critical thinking, trying to be independent of your own preferences and biases. To some effect, that's all there is to it. Naturally, Wikipedians have their biases, some of which can never be cured. Most Wikipedians tend to like encyclopedias; but millions of people in the world don't share that bias, and we represent them rather poorly. I'm also quite sure that an overwhelming majority of Wikipedia co-authors are literate. Again, that's not true for everyone in this world. Yet we have other, less noticeable but barely less fundamental biases.
- News and notes: Bangla-language survey suggests the challenges for small Wikipedias
The Bangla language, also known as Bengali, is spoken by some 200 million people in Bangladesh and India. The Bangla Wikipedia has a very small active community of about ten to fifteen very active editors, with another 35–40 as less active editors. The project faces particular challenges in being a small Wikipedia, and Dhaka-based WMF community fellow User:Tanvir Rahman is working to understand these challenges and to develop strategies that can improve small wikis that have strong potential to expand their editing communities.

Over 40 editors have signed up to provide feedback, a variety of ideas have been proposed, and a manual for dispute resolution has been created.

By removing or blanking the content on the article, as he was the only contributor, he was requesting that the work be deleted. - Op-ed: Wikimedians are rightfully wary
The Wikimedia Foundation sometimes proposes new features that receive substantive criticism from Wikimedians, yet those criticisms may be dismissed on the basis that people are resistant to change—there's an unjustified view that the wikis have been overrun by vested contributors who hate all change. That view misses a lot of key details and insight because there are good reasons that Wikimedians are suspicious of features development, given past and present development of bad software, growing ties with the problematic Wikia, and a growing belief that it is acceptable to experiment on users.
- News and notes: Core content competition in full swing; Wikinews fork taken offline
The Core Contest is a month-long competition among editors to improve Wikipedia's most important "core" articles—especially those that are in a relatively poor state. Core articles, such as Music, Computer, and Philosophy, tend to lie in the trunk of the tree of knowledge; by analogy, featured-and good-article processes generally attract more specialist topics out on the branches.
- In the news: American judges on citing Wikipedia
In the Utah Court of Appeals this week, the majority opinion in Fire Insurance Exchange v. Robert Allen Oltmanns and Brady Blackner relied on Wikipedia for the basic premise of their legal opinion, and included a concurring opinion devoted solely to the issue of citing Wikipedia in a legal opinion.
- Featured content: Enough for a week – but I'm damned if I see how the helican.
Thirteen featured articles were promoted this week, including pelicans, which are a genus of large water birds comprising the family Pelecanidae, characterised by a long beak and large throat-pouch. They have a fossil record dating back at least 30 million years and are most closely related to the Shoebill and Hammerkop. These fish-feeders have a patchy relationship with humans: the birds are sometimes persecuted and sometimes feature in mythology.
- Technology report: Lua onto test2wiki and news of a convention-al extension
New embeddable scripting ("template replacement") language Lua received considerable scrutiny this week when it began its long road to widespread deployment, landing on the test2wiki test site on Wednesday (wikitech-l mailing list). ... the fourth in our series profiling participants in this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) programme.
- WikiProject report: Land of Calm and Contrast: Korea
This week, we spent some time with WikiProject Korea. Started in September 2006, WikiProject Korea covers the history and culture of the Korean people, including both countries that currently occupy the Korean peninsula. This task has proven difficult with North Koreans notably absent from the Wikipedia community due to tight control over access to external media. The project is home to over 16,000 pages, including 15 pieces of Featured material and 66 Good and A-class Articles.
Synopsis please
Could you please complete the synopsis here? I am dying with headache with 13–14 new articles in last 3 days. Still my hand is full with.. to be created... Nabanna play, and some more plays, Asoka cinema hall, Elite Cinema Hall, Menoka Cinema Hall (most probably I'll create it, if I get good references). Reference collection for Deshapriya Park, Mahanirban Math.. etc.... It'll be great if you can complete the synopsis portion here!--Tito Dutta ✉ 19:21, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Read it here. Congrats, you are only Bengali who does not remember Birpurush.
. - Could you please comment on naming conventions of Birpurush (play), Nabanna (play)– are these names okay? Quick comments will be helpful so that I need to move a bunch of articles a month later!
- I have not seen Icche! --Tito Dutta ✉ 19:40, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- That is not a huge deal, it can be done bu changing first word of the lead's format or by adding {{Italic title}}. Could you please help to take Nabanna to DYK by expanding (I can totally help in expanding). This is a great play depicting Bengali famine of 1943 of which 2 million died of starvation. In our school syllabus there was a portion of this play "Anna chai, Pran Chai"!
If you are DYK fan, you can try out my articles, I never try DYK, for example–
- Rabindranath Tagore directed Natir Puja in New Empire Cinema (Kolkata)
- Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose came to Roxy Cinema (Kolkata) to watch Ashok Kumar-starre Kismat etc
If you want I can expand the articles you need (though it is very difficult to expand Calcutta Cinema Halls article)
Back to DYK help related to Nabanna! --Tito Dutta ✉ 21:07, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
speedy deletion of Agroturystyka dom z bali
Just letting you know have deleted the page, but not for the reason you specified. It was not " patent nonsense," it was written in Polish. Material not in English is specifically exempted from from speedy deletion under the criterion you used, as is noted right in the template you used to nominate it. If you see material that is not in English, websites such as What language is this? and Google translate can help you sort out what is really going on. As it turns out in this case it was a thinly veiled advertisement for a tourist attraction of dubious notability, so I have deleted it for those reasons, but if it was a proper article on an encyclopedic subject it should be listed at pages needing translation as opposed to being speedy deleted. Thanks for your time. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:38, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

- That star is the largest star currently known.

- News and notes: Tough journey for new travel guide
Wikimedia editors have been debating a community proposal for the adoption of a new project to host free travel-guide content. The debate reached a new stage when a three-month request for comment on Meta came to an end, with a decision to set up the first new type of Wikimedia project in half a decade. The original proposal for the travel guide unfolded during April on Meta and the Wikimedia-l mailing lists, centring around the wish of volunteer contributors to the WikiTravel project to work in a non-commercial environment.

- Technology report: Just how bad is the code review backlog?
Developers were left one step closer to an understanding of the code review outlook this week after the creation of a graph plotting "number changesets awaiting review" over time. The chart, which also shows the number of new changesets created on a daily basis, reveals a peak in the number of unreviewed changesets in mid-July, followed by a short drop. The current figure stands at approximately 219 unreviewed changesets.
- Featured content: Wikipedia rivals The New Yorker: Mark Arsten
This week the Signpost interviews Mark Arsten, who has written or contributed significantly to ten featured articles; most have related to new religious movements, and some have touched on other controversial or quirky topics. Mark gives us a rundown on how he keeps neutral and what drives him to write featured content; he also gives some hints for aspiring writers.
- WikiProject report: From sonic screwdrivers to jelly babies: Doctor Who
This week, we hopped in a little blue box with a batch of companions from WikiProject Doctor Who. Started in April 2005, the project has grown to include about 4,000 pages about the world's longest-running science fiction television show, its spinoffs, and various related material. The project is the parent of the Torchwood Taskforce and a child of WikiProject British TV and WikiProject Science Fiction. With new Doctor Who episodes airing this week and a 50th anniversary celebration around the corner, we thought now would be a good time to inquire about the famed Time Lord.

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying. Here are my thoughts about the entire Security section:
- "In anticipation of terrorist attacks...": the section starts with a general claim, i.e. not specific to any particular year or event. Hence, the source(s) we use must also support such a broad claim.
- However, I think you haven't found such a source; your present ones are mainly news reports that talk about specific incidents relevant to that year's i-day alone. For eg, this 2002 source talks of fundamentalists concerns and hence "12,000 people are now deployed". IMO, this source, even in conjuction with similar sources from 2005, 09 and 12 etc, and cannot be used to support the general claim of the first sentence.
- Instead, I suggest you rewrite the section by starting with an uncited general sentence and then follow up with specific incidents. For eg: "In 1950, Nagas threatened to boycott i-day", "In 1991, ULFA caused trouble", "In 2002, 12,000 troops were deployed"... Hopefully you can give a broad idea of the security concerns by pointing specific examples.
- This will also address my worry that the section is currently a little vague—to a non-Indian reader who lacks context, it could appear as though the likes of LeT and ULFA having been terrorising us ever since Independence. :)
Another thing, I think the article needs a bit about the Swarna Jayanti (golden jubilee) in 1997 (or 1996? Not sure how to count—does it mean the 50th i-day or the 50th anniversary of i-day?). I think the govt announced a bunch of schemes etc. Maybe a sub-section of Celebration?—indopug (talk) 13:04, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- "which and how many years to mention" and "inclusion criteria": there doesn't need to be an objective, hard-and-fast rule. I guess we try to give an example or two from the various decades and the relevant groups (Islamists, NE separatists and Maoists)? Yeah, the decades idea is a good one.—indopug (talk) 14:01, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

- (talk page stalker)I appreciate your edits on the article. After generating so much heat, do you think going for PR2 would be an appropriate step? or shall we continue with this and re-nominate for GOCE and then apply for FL again in some time? - Vivvt • (Talk) 19:23, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- Nomination is now added to "Failed log". I have restored GOCE request which Animesh had withdrawn couple of days back. I'm not sure about how to deal with the copy-vio issue. Official catalogue is already part of references from where everything is referenced. As per FLC comments, 100% copy-paste not allowed, so even if we reference each of them, it wouldn't answer the basic concern of copy-paste. Do we have any copy-vio expert in WP:INCINE? - Vivvt • (Talk) 02:57, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

- News and notes: World's largest photo competition kicks off; WMF legal fees proposal
Some of Wikimedia's most valuable photographs have been shot and uploaded under free licenses as a direct result of the annual Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) event each September. Last year, the project was conducted on a European level, resulting in the submission of an extraordinary 168,208 free images of cultural heritage sites ("monuments") from 18 countries, making it the world's largest photographic competition. Organising the 2012 event—which has just opened and will run for the full month of September—has required input from chapters and volunteers in 35 countries.

- Op-ed: Dispute resolution – where we're at, what we're doing well, and what needs fixing
Since May 2012 I've been a Wikimedia Foundation community fellow with the task of researching and improving dispute resolution on English Wikipedia. Surveying members of the community has revealed much about their thoughts on and experiences with dispute resolution. I've analysed processes to determine their use and effectiveness, and have presented ideas that I hope will improve the future of dispute resolution.
