WikiCup 2019 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

• L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
• Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
• MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
• Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
• Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
• Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). PNCA Art+Feminism Wikipedia Editathon, Saturday, March 9

• The RfC on administrator activity requirements failed to reach consensus for any proposal.
• Following discussions at the Bureaucrats' noticeboard and Wikipedia talk:Administrators, an earlier change to the restoration of adminship policy was reverted. If requested, bureaucrats will not restore administrator permissions removed due to inactivity if there have been five years without a logged administrator action; this "five year rule" does not apply to permissions removed voluntarily.

• A new tool is available to help determine if a given IP is an open proxy/VPN/webhost/compromised host.

Arbitration

• The Arbitration Committee announced two new OTRS queues. Both are meant solely for cases involving private information; other cases will continue to be handled at the appropriate venues (e.g., WP:COIN or WP:SPI).

International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, Oregon Jewish Museum, Thursday, March 7

The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, in partnership with social practice artist Shoshana Gugenheim and as part of the Art+Feminism Project, will host the 2nd Annual International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to edit and/or create Wikipedia articles for Jewish women artists. The event will be held at the museum on Thursday, March 7 from 4 to 8 pm. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it. We aim to collaboratively edit/enter 18 Jewish women artists into the canon. Support will be provided by an experienced local Wikipedian who will be on site to teach and guide the process. This edit-a-thon will serve as both a public art action and a public educational program. Participants will have an opportunity to select an artist/s ahead of time or on site.

Still working in drafts?

I may have already brought this up with you, so if I have, I'm asking again: Why did you tell me at some point in the not-too-distant past that if I wanted to make a page for a topic you'd already made a redirect for, to just approach or ping you and ask for you to request speedy deletion for it yourself, but you don't actually approach any other editor to ask them to do so for theirs? I'm not asking this so you'll start doing it to me, but it seems like a double standard, as if this was some congenial thing you would afford other editors/you want them to let you know their intentions, but you don't seem to want to let them know you're intending to make pages for their redirects by informing them about it. Instead, you're still going the draft route (as you've done for the two Diplo EPs you just made articles for), as if you're unsure the topics you're making redirects for are even notable. You're not new, you're an editor who's been around for over a decade, like myself, and I would trust by this point you know what's notable and what's not, considering you're also including news sources and reviews on them, which are clear indications of notability. Please don't tell me the only reason is "I don't know how editors would react if asked, but I know I would if asked" because as I said, it just seemed like you want(ed) to be informed for some reason but don't actually do the same in practice. I'm not accusing you of acting in bad faith, I'm just baffled by the fact that you're still making these articles as drafts instead of in your userspace. I only recommend this to newer editors. This is exactly why I never did and still won't come to you to let you know; I'll just request it elsewhere, because your request made no sense if it's not a vice versa thing. I'll also be sure to make a little stub next time Diplo announces an EP, album or notable song, and it'd be great to see you work on that...Doubt it though. Ss112 12:52, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Also, I see you're still uploading oversized jpgs. I know you said "I'll leave it to a bot to resize them, thanks", but literally what is the point if your original file is just going to be deleted anyway? That completely negates the point of you even bothering to upload them in the first place. Also, it only takes a matter of seconds to resize a file. Every computer has either Paint or a similar simple artwork program that allows you to do this, and you can very easily resize the files (to 300×300 or smaller) in about two clicks. I also already told you, but jpgs are compressed, and pngs are preferred for artworks. Ss112 13:06, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Ss112, We've had this discussion before. I don't have a problem moving a draft over a redirect in the main space, nor do I have a problem with other editors doing the same to override redirects I've created. I don't recall requesting to be notified about potential overrides, but you're welcome to direct me to my previous comment. I have a feeling this was a special instance involving a technical restriction. I don't think editors should take ownership of their redirects. Creating an article takes more work than creating a redirect, and the author should have the right to move their work over a redirect. Nobody's taking ownership of redirects... that would be rather hypocritical of me to complain that you did this, as I do it (or request it) quite a bit myself (and have even done it to several of yours, if I recall correctly). Not the issue. My main confusion stemmed from the articles originating in draftspace, which is frequently the place to incubate undersourced or potential non-notable topics, and the place for editors unsure of how to make an article and the like to start pages. It just seems to be a rather strange method. For the record, I don't recall where you requested to be notified nor over what, but I definitely recall you having said it. I would have left it there AB, but that's a very bizarre sign-off. I'm sure I don't need to say that we can't all just do as we see fit on Wikipedia, as there are policies and guidelines stating or recommending how we should do things, and most of us are here to improve Wikipedia. It's not as if you needed to make that clear, because there was never a doubt here that what you did was to improve Wikipedia in some way. I made that clear from the start. Honestly, I've been noticing that user's edits quite a bit and while I hadn't wanted to intervene, I had thoughts that I should, or might have to. It looks like the "might have to" point has come. Take a look at Theneondemon's edits. They go back far, and it's a pattern of them constantly changing the progress tables to fit their own view point. It's nothing personal, but I stumbled upon your pattern of article creations that substantially fail to conform to the basic requirements of organization notability. You've preached how you have been editing for years but the fact other veteran editors also find your contents lacking in notability should mean something. You didn't articulate with a counter-argument in the scope of business notability guidelines as used on Wikipedia, not how you personally feel. I find it a waste of everyone's time to nominate for deletion and go through consensus process for multiple articles that substantially fail to meet the same set of guidelines. Graywalls, I understand what you mean, but if you look at the Nuestra Cocina talk page you'll see that the entry has already survived a deletion discussion. Just because articles are short does not mean they need to be deleted. I'm just asking for talk page discussions to start because I'm logging in and seeing 10 pages that have been either merged, nominated for deletion, or deleted, and now I'm having to scramble to rescue them all. I recognize you may not care because you believe the topics are not notable, but I'm asking you to please slow down so editors can discuss and take action. Another Believer, Assuming you're not exaggerating about logging into ten deletion and mergers, you know it wasn't all me nominating them. If multiple people are nominating your articles for deletion, I'm inclined to say it might be your actions, not other editors. You appeal to your experience and confidence when I've challenged your articles and edits and with your level of experience, I'm surprised you're adding all these articles that do not have the necessary elements. I'm the editor who nominated it. Many of your articles have come under scrutiny, so I have found out. Most of your opposition arguments have been appeal to confidence and "The article should be expanded, not deleted." without supporting premises. For this particular article, you had all of two sentences and one reference made of the company's official website and a list of seven addresses as of Mar 3, 2019. This rightfully earned you the unambiguous promotion deletion. When many of your articles have the same fundamental issue (lack of basic notability and obvious promotional intent hinted by tone, and participation by the businesses by the means of direct editing), I'd be wasting other editors' time to list them for deletion consensus building. So if you aren't ignorant of notability guidelines, you're gaming the system by trying to increase the work load as a deterrent to deletion. Graywalls (talk) 16:34, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

I have learned a lot about mistakes I was making from deletion discussions, and am a more careful editor now. Don't take it too much to heart. A few deleted articles are not that big a deal. Article deletions are not the end of the world to me, but I still don't think articles about notable topics should be deleted, and my biggest frustration is not being able to rescue everything at once. Hello, and I hope all is well. With some of your newest templates of West Coast artists, there seems to be an unwritten template rule (maybe it should be written) that a template should have at least five entries. Templates like {{Buster Simpson}} are coming in under that. There are quite a few major artists who have under five possible-use entries, and they are untemplated (my favorites among the 'untemplated' include John Peter Russell and many European painters). Randy Kryn, Hey! I was not aware of a 5-article rule, but I sometimes create navboxes when I find 4 related entries, such as 3 works associated with an artist. Unless I am overlooking, I don't see a number requirement at Wikipedia:Navbox or Template:Navbox, so I'm not exactly sure. If you're asking whether or not you should create navboxes, I say be bold and create templates you think are helpful to the project. Yes, I think it's an unwritten rule sometimes used at the templates-for-deletion page, but not written into the Holey writ. I opened a category once for John Russell, thinking that there would be more pages than just his portrait of van Gogh, and was surprised upon finding it was his only painting that had a Wikipedia page. WikiProject importance scale

Hello, I noticed that you have updated the importance scale of several WikiProjects. Out of curiosity, can anyone update this? What is the criteria that is used? For example, the importance scale for Pure Heroine is low even though I think it should be raised a bit higher given how many publications have cited the album as influential or a record that aided in pop music's transition to slower tempo songs and deeper lyrical content. De88, Yes, quality assessment ratings are subjective and can be manually adjusted by any editor. Wikipedia:Content assessment and Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Release Version Criteria should provide helpful information. You should know, many editors (myself included) use the Rater gadget (User:Evad37/rater, formerly User:Kephir/gadgets/rater) which automatically assesses and assumes low-importance as the default importance rating. This is because for most WikiProjects, most articles are ranked low-importance. So, the tool starts here, then the community can change quality and importance ratings as they see fit. Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles. @JamesBWatson, JJMC89, and Onel5969: There was no need to delete the article's history altogether. Plastique is likely to be notable in the future. You one of you please restore the deleted markup? I'm open to moving the markup into Draft:Plastique Tiara (or Draft:Plastique Tiara 2 since there's an existing draft page), but I'd like the markup for future reference, please. For the record, I agree with maintaining the redirect, but I wish to keep the article history as well. ---Another Believer _(Talk) 13:26, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

The reason that I deleted the article, rather than just edit-protecting it, is that my experience is that in this situation keeping the article's history serves to encourage the editors who wish to undermine consensus at the deletion discussion. Very often they do things such as copying the content to a new article under a new title to evade protection. Of course, there is nothing to stop them from just creating a brand new article with a different title anyway, but in practice they far less often do so if they see that what they create is likely to disappear completely. I feel that is particularly important in this case, as the editor involved has a history of multiple sockpuppetry and block evasion, and because he or she has openly stated the intention of continuing to defy the deletion decision. What would you say to a compromise by keeping it deleted for a few months and then restoring it? That might possibly deter the disruptive editor, but still make the content available for possible future use. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:03, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

During the situation with Tony85poon, I wondered why you're not an admin. I found User_talk:Another_Believer/Archive_24#No_mop? and I can say I was once like you, deflecting suggestions that I run for adminship, and those two points were two of my reasons for saying no. But, to those points, (a) I thought the admin nomination process would be a pain too, but it wasn't. There are a few challenging questions to answer, but they can help you reflect on your editing and what kind of admin you'd be. And (b) Mr Guye showed you that list of tools. It can get complex, but you can keep it simple too. If there's a vandal working fast and furious, you can block them. Protecting pages from vandalism, removing serious BLP violations from the edit histories, that's mostly what I use it for. If there's an admin task you don't want to involve yourself in, you don't have to! You could be the admin who blocks a stray vandal once or twice but otherwise focuses on the content. I'm still creating content about the same rate I was before. I was hesitant to take the plunge too, but I don't regret it. I doubt you would either. Muboshgu, I really appreciate your kind words and trust with admin tools. I've been approached many times to become an admin, both on- and off-wiki. Every time someone asks, I say I'll give this some thought, and then I end up forgetting once I start getting back into Wikipedia's trenches. So, I'll just say now, thanks and I'll give this some consideration once again, but don't hold your breath. That sounds familiar to me too. I think I said "I'll think about it" in order to punt on it many times before I gave in and did it. I understand the concern about the responsibility. I had that concern too. It hasn't been a problem for me as all of the admin activities are voluntary. You don't have a "shift" where you have to be in charge of blocking vandals, protecting pages, or anything like that. You do it out of your own interest. I also think your hesitation/resistance/whatever-you-want-to-call-it is one of the signs you'd make a great admin. If you were going to abuse the power, you would've taken the plunge years ago. 1890s through 1960

The building at the corner of SW 3rd and Burnside has gone through many incarnations. One of the confounding factors, when researching the history of this building, is that in 1891, Portland annexed territories east of the Willamette River, and enacted an ordinance for numbering the streets, but in 1931, the north-to-south division of the city was shifted from SW Ankeny Street to Burnside Street, which necessitated yet another change in the numbering system of streets. The Oregon Historical Society has a directory that effectively translates the old addresses into the newer format. For example, an address that was formerly at 13 Northwest 3rd Avenue, was now "shifted" south and became simply number 3 Southwest 3rd Avenue, the current site of Dante's pizza window. Properties on the south side of Burnside were "shifted" east. The three story structure at 314 SW Burnside was formerly numbered as 264 SW Burnside. While this re-alignment was confusing at the time, it laid the groundwork for the modern Portland street system as it is currently aligned.

In transcribing the history of the building, it is important to remember that Dante's is composed of two structures. The main room is in a one-story structure and comprises the eastern half of the venue. The Limbo Lounge sits to the west and there are an additional two stories above it, that are currently in use.

Examination of Oregon Historical Society documents indicates that the parcel of land that Dante's currently sits upon are lots 5 through 8 of the block in Couch's Addition, and were owned by various members of the Jorgensen family, beginning sometime around the 1890s to 1900s, and possibly earlier. This is further corroborated through the City of Portland's Bureau of Buildings, which is in possession of several building permits for the property, filed by various members of the Jorgensen family or estate. The earliest dates to October 19, 1921, at the 3-story property at 314 West Burnside Street (formerly known as 266 West Burnside Street under the pre-1931 street system), which references the ground floor property as a "Soft drink and Lunch."

Permit records from June 30, 1926, indicate that the same property was home to a rooming house on its second and third stories. By cross-referencing these records with a phone directory from 1930 and the Crane's Directory, it appears that the 3-story building was formerly known as the Montana Hotel.

Further examination of Oregon Historical Society photographs of the intersection of SW 3rd and Burnside, dated from May 1927, clearly show the landmark Union Theater (now the Paris Theater) just across the street from the eastern half of Dante's which is where the main room, bar, and kitchen are currently situated. There is a second and third story on top of the existing structure which is labeled as the Winchester House. It is this property that was reputed to be a brothel, but in the parlance of the times it was also known as a "flophouse". Interviews with persons of this era also indicate that this was where day-laborers could be found, in addition to a host of other characters. The 1929 phone book also lists tenants of the first floor of the block to be a restaurant owned by Fred Soller and a clothier named Julius Breall. Prior to the appearance of the Winchester House, this building is reported to have been a liquor distribution warehouse.

On October 2, 1930, Pauline Jorgensen, the listed owner of the Winchester House had the Rose City Wrecking Company demolish the Winchester House's wooden structure down to the existing one-story structure that forms Dante's main room. The last existing inspection records of the 3-story property referencing Jorgensen ownership are dated March 24, 1959, and specifically cite the installation of fire doors and wooden partitions in the current 3-story structure that forms Dante's Limbo Lounge. The City's last record of Jorgensen ownership or activity of the one-story structure is dated June 29, 1983, and lists a Victor Hugo Jorgensen as the owner of the one-story property.

1960–present

There have been several owners and incarnations inside of the one-story and three-story structures that form Dante's. At some point, fill-brick was used to partition the once contiguous ground-floor space. This was later removed and the original brickwork was restored and structurally upgraded.

From the 1960s onward, records on the 3-story structure are sparse, but a series of documents dated to 1979 indicated that the building was owned by Rip City Realty. There are additional documents dated January 8, 1982, that list a Lanny Swerdlow as the owner of the aforementioned structure. Swerdlow came to rather infamous notoriety in Portland after opening a series of alternative-lifestyle nightclubs for teens, running afoul of the law on numerous occasions. In the 1990s the ground floor was home to the infamous Dr. Bill's Learning Center. Following Dr. Bill's retirement in 1996, it became Aja's Lingerie. Currently located on the top floor suite, It is now the only female owned/operated private adult entertainment club exclusive to gentleman only, management has remained the same since 2009, even though the owners and names of the business have frequently changed throughout the years. The third floor has a separate entrance located directly to the west of Dante's main doors. The entryway leads to a staircase that you can climb to the third floor to find this underground tourist attraction that has been a tourist favorite hot spot for many years. The one-story structure has primarily served as a restaurant since the 1960s, but appears to have been unoccupied for several long stretches. Permits from 1984 indicate that the restaurant was legally known as the New Canaan Restaurant (corporate name), doing business as Chang's Mongolian Grill. From 1985 to 1999, the one-story structure comprising Dante's main room, at the southwest corner of West Burnside and Third Avenue, was the original Chang's Mongolian Grill. On April 1, 1999, Frank Faillace took over the lease from Chang's, remodeling and opening on February 3, 2000.

Prior to 1984, there are virtually no official building or inspection records that help to identify the activity in this particular property. In the 1970s up until 1984, it was a punk rock music venue called The Metropolis or "The Met", which featured underground punk bands like The Cramps and The Wipers. The Met was a favorite hangout of a diverse crowd including punk rockers, drag queens and strippers including a soon-to-be-famous Courtney Love.

The building is currently owned by J.A. Atwood Investments.

Mother's Monument and translation in general

Hi AB, I added a translated page template to the Mother's Monument talk page. I assume that your creation of this article is related to the discussion you started at the Village Pump about increasing translations of articles? I did a quick edit, but there is still work to be done. I'm afraid that there were tells that at least the base of the article came from Google Translate or a similar program (we see this a lot at the GOCE). For example, the phrase "the sculptures are made of quarry on an enclosure base." This seems to be the translation given by Google for "las esculturas son de cantera sobre una base de recinto" at the Spanish article. I don't know the word "cantera" (my Spanish is, at best, mediocre), but Google gives one definition as "piedra que se utiliza en la construcción" (rock used in construction), which is likely the intended meaning here instead of "quarry." There may be other mistranslations that are less obvious, though, but could misinform a reader of the article. That is one reason why I was nervous about article quality in a translation competition. It was also partially why I started my (sadly unsuccessful) wikiproject for fluent speakers of different languages to partner together to translate articles from one language to the other. My translation was not related to the Village Pump discussion -- I saw this monument during a recent visit to Mexico City, so I just wanted there to be an article at English Wikipedia like there is at Spanish Wikipedia. Thanks for alerting me to that discussion. I reply here (rather than there) because it is a serious but complex set of issues that you touch on, and I am not sure I will usefully progress the thing if I jump into the soup on the basis of instant reactions. My general impression is that you have triggered lots of interesting thoughts and ideas, but the more strands you get into the discussion the harder it becomes to get to something that will cohere into a doable project. Herding cats comes to mind. And speaking (writing) for myself, I fear I am instinctively more likely to identify with the cats than with the shepherds and their dogs, however much I admire and / or respect the motives of the dogs and their partners.

My (relatively) considered thoughts on the translation project are summarised here. It was set up - or at least relaunched - by a wiki-user with huge focus, energy and sheer intellectual horsepower steaming out of his ears. "Dr Blofeld" has done more that is good for wikipedia than most of us are ever likely to manage ("IMHO..."). And he himself has contributed large amounts of good content over the years which gives him authority in terms of leading - trying to lead - others of us. But nevertheless, the translation project was an example of Person A enthusiastically telling Persons B, C and D and and what to do. And, which is more striking, how to do it. I went along with it because it ties in, more or less, with what I already did. I still do partly out of habit, partly because the structure of the thing helps me structure my wiki activity and partly because simply having it still there draws peoples' attention to the potential goldmine of wiki-viable information in wikipedia versions which are not in the English language. And although none of the other people who jumped in and joined the relaunched project back in 2015 still uses it to structure their work, many of them are still producing excellent translations for en-wiki. Mostly quietly unless (1) you know where to look or (2) you just happen to alight on an example.

I have received various invitations to participate in marathons over the years, but I tend to ignore them (if they're standardised) or at least politely decline (if they're personal). Time spent mastering the marathon-rules (or worse still, trying to influence them) is time I would rather spend contributing "content". But this is a personal thing to me. The team sports gene has rather passed me by. That makes me a bit of a curmudgeon. Guilty as charged; but there are self-evidently an awful lot of curmudgens doing their number constructively (in many cases) on wikipedia. Marathons can be fun once in a while, but I think - however much I shared the underlying goals - I think I would be unlikely to come on board and if I did I'd be unlikely to stay. But that's just me. I do wish you every success. Wikipedia always needs new ideas, and with the average age of productive contributors still getting higher I suspect that these days it needs them ever more. And you have already triggered plenty of other thoughts each one of which may go to a good place on a large scale or a lesser scale. That's all helpful. Thank you much. I am bothered by your comments along the line of "removing similar low quality image", reverting with comment such as "it was better" as projects an assertion of inferiority against others and superiority of yourself. Most recently, in this edit. I am not the only who voiced concerns of your apparent superiority attitude as seen here. When editing on articles in which you worked on or created, the interaction makes me feel as if you are exhibiting a sense of ownership on those articles. In my actual opinion, I believe the composition of the main photo in the article in question is quite poor, but that is my opinion and it would be uncivil for me to remove it with a remark like yours. Portland bridges

Just wondering if it would be better to redirect Sullivan's Crossing and Flanders Crossing into I-84 and I-405, respectively, until they're actually built. I saw your ping and I was about to respond on the article's talk page, but then suddenly the page was gone. I would have argued against deletion as I agree that the segment is absolutely noteworthy enough to have its own article. While I think the article could have continued to be improved to include more secondary coverage and demonstrate Snatch Game's cultural impact (and we editors were working towards doing so), there was no reason in my opinion to delete it altogether. WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

• Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
• Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
• Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
• Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Barkeep49 with six GAs, Ceranthor, Lee Vilenski, and Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

• A request for comment concluded that creating pages in the portal namespace should be restricted to autoconfirmed users.
• Following a request for comment, the subject-specific notability guideline for pornographic actors and models (WP:PORNBIO) was removed; in its place, editors should consult WP:ENT and WP:GNG.

Technical news

• XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

• In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
• Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

Sarah Jones is an American-born broadcast and print journalist, author, and founder of the Remembering Fallen Journalists movement, which honors journalists who have died while on assignment.

Early life and authorship

Jones grew up outside Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, Albert Beckford Jones, a business executive, served as of 2019 as special advisor for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Research Competitiveness Program (RCP). Her mother, Layla, is a retired 19th century English literature professor. When Sarah Jones was 13, she wrote a cancer awareness publication, Cancer Awareness Magazine (CAM for Kids) focused on Leukemia, that was later published as a book by the American Cancer Society. The publication received approval by the American Cancer Society, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Mayo Clinic and Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York. These groups distributed it to leukemia patients and their families. Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Lake Forest College, Illinois, and a M.A. with Merit, in 2009, from the City, University of London, England graduate school of journalism.

Career

In 2018, she was hired as a television journalist by KWQC, a television station serving the Quad Cities metropolitan area in Iowa. Various media companies have employed her as a journalist, among them TRT World, Reuters Trust; VICE; Al Jazeera America; CNN; ITN’s Channel 4 News; Gulf News; BBC World Service; affiliates of NBC News and ABC NewsJones is recipient of the Best Journalist in Social Media at the Sixth Annual Shorty Awards in New York City, Times Center, in 2014.Jones received an International Women’s Media Foundation fellow in 2018 and is a two time International Reporting Project Fellow (IRP.) She has been a featured speaker at international conferences, including the International Women and Justice Summit in 2016.

To not take up so much space in the main discussion, I will provide an overview here to attempt to understand your expectations using albums by The 1975 as an example. The 1975 have four albums and four EPs within Category:The 1975 albums.

• The 1975 (album), listed genres: indie rock, indie pop, electropop, funk rock, pop rock
• A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships, genres: pop, rock, electropop, contemporary R&B
• I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It, genres: indie rock, dance-rock, dance-pop, contemporary R&B, new wave, synth-pop, post-rock
• Notes on a Conditional Form, upcoming album - no genres listed

Let's ignore the new album and the EPs for now. Based on the sourced genres of their 3 albums, I've categorized each album article in the respective categories (or the "by nationality" sub-category). Based only on those 3, what do you see as permittable within Category:The 1975 albums? Each of the three has rock or a subgenre of rock, each has pop or a subgenre of pop, each has a subgenre of R&B and each has a subgenre of electronic music, so can its parents be: Category:Rock albums by English artists, Category:Pop albums by English artists, Category:Rhythm and blues albums by English artists, and Category:Electronic albums by English artists? You should not be categorizing Category:The 1975 albums. Instead, you should be adding categories to individual articles. But if their only albums were those three under those genres (please ignore the other albums and EPs for this example). Just those 3 albums is what we are looking at and assuming they have no others.

• 2 say indie rock and 1 says rock. Since indie rock is a subgenre of rock, Category:The 1975 albums can correctly be categorized as Category:Rock albums by English artists.
• 2 say electropop and 1 says synth-pop. Since those are both subgenres of electronic music, Category:The 1975 albums can correctly be categorized as Category:Electronic albums by English artists.
• 1 says funk rock and 2 say contemporary R&B. Since those are both subgenres of R&B music, Category:The 1975 albums can correctly be categorized as Category:Rhythm and blues albums by English artists.

Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars, Too complicated. No genre categories needed for "The 1975 albums" when the album articles can be categorized appropriately. Fear in a Handful of Dust

You redirected this album article back to the artist Amon Tobin back in February – I agree it was the right thing to do at the time, given that the album's release was still more than two months away and there was no information about it at that moment. However, we now have at least five reviews from reliable sources and an article, albeit a primary source interview in Clash magazine . Do you think we could restore the article now?
