Gabriel Vitale Memorial Field is a municipal athletic field and recreation facility located at 676 Carman Avenue in Westbury, New York. The facility is listed by the Town of Hempstead as a public park venue and includes a baseball field, basketball court, and soccer field.[1][2]
The Town of Hempstead lists the facility under its Special Park Districts section and notes that facilities in that district are open only to residents of the district.[1]
History
editThe field is named in memory of Police Officer Gabriel Vitale, a member of the New York City Police Department's 109th Precinct who was fatally shot in the line of duty in December 1980.[3][4] On Christmas Eve in December 1980, Officer Vitale and his partner Officer Anthony J. Abruzzo responded to a burglar alarm where he and his partner attempted to stop two suspicious men. After Vitale apprehended one suspect, the suspect produced a .45-caliber handgun and shot him twice; Vitale later died from his injuries.[3]
