The 2027 Indian Premier League, also known as IPL 20 and branded as TATA IPL 2027, will be the 20th edition of the Indian Premier League, a professional Twenty20 cricket league. The tournament will feature 10 teams competing in 84 matches.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions.

Background

edit

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 (T20) cricket league, organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has been held annually since the first edition in 2008.[1] Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions, having won their second consecutive title in the previous season after defeating Gujarat Titans in the final.[2]

Format

edit

The IPL Governing Council has announced that the IPL would expand to 84 matches for 2027,[3][4] with it expected to expand to 94 matches from 2028 onwards with the return of the complete double round-robin format that was used until 2021.[5]

Schedule

edit

According to ESPNcricinfo, the dates of the tournament window for the three seasons between 2025 and 2027 were sent to franchises ahead of the 2025 auction.[6] In November 2024, the tentative dates for the three seasons were announced, with the 2027 edition set to take place from 14 March to 30 May.[7] In the meantime, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has consolidated the February–March window for its annual men's competitions (Cricket World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, Men's T20 World Cup) starting from 2025.[8] As a result the 2025 and 2026 IPL seasons were postponed from their originally announced dates to maintain a few weeks gap after 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and 2026 Men's T20 World Cup respectively.[9][10] Furthermore, the suspension and rescheduling of the 2025 season led to the final week of playoffs being held a week before the 2025 World Test Championship final and other bilateral cricket series, which led to a player unavailability.[11][12] The Pakistan Super League moved from its typical February–March window for the same reason also clashed with the IPL in both seasons.[13][14]

For the year 2027, the ICC has scheduled two major men's events: 2027 Cricket World Cup and 2027 World Test Championship final. In June 2026, it was announced that the IPL would be moved to a September–October window from 2027 onwards considering the Indian weather condition during the March–May window.[15]
