Sonic the Hedgehog CD, or simply Sonic CD, is a 1993 side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Sega as a Sega CD sequel to its 1991 bestseller Sonic the Hedgehog.

Gameplay

edit

Sonic CD is a side-scrolling platform game similar in style and gameplay to its predecessors Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), save for the introduction of new game mechanics. Like the previous games, the single-player controls the speedy blue hedgehog Sonic as he ventures to stop his nemesis, the mad scientist Doctor Robotnik. Likewise, gameplay is similar: Sonic can destroy enemies and objects (such as certain walls and television monitors containing power-ups) by rolling into a ball, and collects rings as a form of health. Sonic starts with three lives, which are lost when they suffer any type of damage without rings in their possession; losing all lives results in a game over. In Sonic CD, Sonic gains the ability to perform a peel out that can instantly launch him at full speed. Sonic also retains the spin dash from Sonic 2 (allowing him to quickly curl into a ball and gain speed), but it works slightly differently.

Unlike earlier Sonic games, Sonic CD has a stronger focus on exploration.[1]
