editCentum
editIn 1992, a fictitious video company is preparing to launch the video game Centum, which features artificially generated levels created by the experimental AI program Beemkie. In the first level, the player takes on the role of an unnamed prisoner trapped in a cell. A mysterious boy identifying himself as a "Friend" offers to assist them in escaping the cell.
The setting shifts to the modern-day bedroom of one of Centum's developers. He is concerned with his young nephew Tim, who has recently begun using the name "Marmoset".
The third level is set in a playground on the outskirts of a city, where Tim himself is currently residing. Over the course of the several days, he meets 2A, Desmod, Valeri, and Elaine, a group of "Rats"— uncanny humans who recently escaped from a facility conducting experiments on them.
The final level is a blend of the three previous levels. Exiting the labyrinth, the player turns up at the Black River on the edge of the simulation. They meet a fisherman who explains that Beemkie created the simulated world in an attempt to satisfy the playtesters trapped inside, and he himself is content with this existence. He also speculates that the real Tim has long since returned to the real world; the "Tim" is the simulation is an artificial clone based on Beemkie's memories of him. As the player leaves the simulation, Beemkie appears to them and wishes them well. He also expresses hope that he may one day create a reality that the denizens may find happiness in.
