The Mustafayev family refers to Azerbaijani chemists and professors Mamed Ismail oglu Mustafayev (1944–2007) and Zeyneb Gadim qizi Mustafayeva (1949–2020). Both made pioneering contributions in chemistry, polymer research, and bioengineering in the USSR, Azerbaijan, and Turkey. Their joint scientific legacy includes over 300 publications and more than 100 patents.[1]

Mamed Ismail oglu Mustafayev

Mamed Ismail oglu Mustafayev (23 October 1944 – 14 June 2007) was an Azerbaijani chemist and professor.[2]

Early life and education

Born in Evli, Kalinin district (Armenian SSR). Graduated from secondary school with a gold medal (1960). Studied chemistry at Moscow State University, graduating with distinction (1966).[3] Earned his PhD at the Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis (1970).[4] Defended Doctor of Sciences dissertation in 1981.[5]

  • 1991–1994: Head of Problem Laboratory and Chair of Organic Chemistry, Baku State University.[7]

Mamed Mustafayev died on 14 June 2007 in Baku. His gravestone bears the inscription: Professor Mamed Ismail oglu Mustafayev, 23.X.1944 – 14.VI.2007.[15]

Zeyneb Gadim qizi Mustafayeva

Zeyneb Gadim qizi Mustafayeva (7 November 1949 – 6 April 2020) was an Azerbaijani chemist and professor of organic chemistry.[16]

Early life and education

Born in Azerbaijan. Graduated with honors from Baku State University, Faculty of Chemistry.[17] Defended Candidate of Sciences dissertation (1989) at the Institute of Chemistry of Additives: Synthesis and Transformations of Unsaturated Chlorine-Containing Epoxy Compounds.[18]

Death

Zeyneb Mustafayeva died on 6 April 2020 in Istanbul. She was buried in Baku beside her husband. Her gravestone bears the inscription: Professor Zeyneb Gadim qizi Mustafayeva, 7.XI.1949 – 6.IV.2020.[24]

Personal life

Mamed and Zeyneb married in 1971. They had two children: Ruslan (b. 1977) and Nigar (b. 1979). Their joint gravestones in Baku carry the title Professor, reflecting their academic achievements.

Legacy and recognition

The Mustafayevs bridged scientific traditions from the USSR to Azerbaijan and Turkey. Their research laid foundations for polymer chemistry, immunochemistry, and bioengineering.

Following Mamed’s death in 2007, Japanese scientist Yoshihito Osada (RIKEN) wrote:

“He was not only an excellent scientist but also a gentleman and a warm-hearted man. This friendship is unforgettable.”
