Richard Freudenstein
editRichard Freudenstein (born 29 March 1965) is an Australian businessman who is a former chief executive officer of Foxtel.[1], News Digital Media [2] and a former chief operating officer of British Sky Broadcasting plc [3]. Richard became a Non-executive Director in 2006 when he joined the board of REA Group [4].
Early Life and Education
editRichard Freudenstein grew up on a farm near Young NSW and attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School in Sydney. Richard holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Law (Hons) from the University of Sydney. In addition, Richard has completed Marketing for Senior Executives at Harvard Business School.
Career
editRichard Freudenstein was Chief Executive Officer of Foxtel [5] from 2011 until April 2016. Prior to this Richard was CEO of News Digital Media [6] (the digital division of News Corp Australia) and The Australian newspaper and was the Chief Operating Officer at Sky Group Limited (formerly) British Sky Broadcasting from 1999 to 2006 [7].
Richard commenced his career as a lawyer in Sydney and New York and transitioned into the media industry with roles at Foxtel, British Sky Broadcasting and News Corporation over 22 years. Richard has worked as an executive or board member on a range of listed and unlisted companies both nationally and internationally (Australia, UK and Asia).
Richard is currently a Non-executive Director of REA Group Limited [8], Coles Group Limited [9], Cricket Australia [10] and Cochlear [11]. Richard was previously the Deputy Chancellor of The University of Sydney [12] , Chairman of Appen [13], and a non executive director Ten Network Holdings Ltd [14],Foxtel, ESPN Star Sports [15] and Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad [16].
Cricket
editRichard has been on the board of Cricket Australia since June 2019 [17]. He also served as interim Chair of Cricket Australia (2021-2022) [18] and as Cricket Australia’s representative on the Board of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from 2021 to 2023 [19]
Not for profit / Social responsibility
editRichard was a director of Wenona School [20], Bell Shakespeare Company [21], the English National Ballet [22]and Chairman of the Royal Television Society [23] in the United Kingdom.
