User:Pdebee/Project page/Places in Finland

The purpose of the present user page is to manage the project of identifying places in Finland (mainly former municipalities) for which there are no articles here at the en.Wikipedia, and which could therefore be considered as candidates for translation from their equivalent articles at the Finnish Wikipedia.

The motivation behind this project is that, even though they have been amalgamated into larger conurbations (or ceded to the USSR in the 1940s), these former municipalities have a distinct history in their own right, and/or are the birth places of notable people, or have notable features, such a churches, monuments, lakes, canals, etc.

edit

The following table includes all the municipalities shown with red links in the navboxes for each region listed in the first column, and for which an article is therefore missing at the en.wiki.

Articles to create from redirects

edit

The following table includes all the municipalities shown with blue links that are only redirects in List of former municipalities of Finland for each region listed in the first column. A new article therefore also needs to be translated from fi.wiki for each of these, to overwrite the redirect.

Some will be municipalities ceded to the USSR in the 1940s; the others will be those that have been absorbed within larger Finnish conurbations. All their names need to be added to the appropriate regional navboxes, including the new navbox for Territories of Finland ceded to the USSR in the 1940s, based on fi:Malline:Luovutetut alueet (where 'Malline:' = 'Template:').

Disambiguation pages to update or create

edit

The following Notes section lists dab pages that will be affected by the creation of new articles at the e.wiki.

Discrepancies (red linked articles not in navboxes)

edit

The following former municipalities are red linked in List of former municipalities of Finland, but missing from the navboxes; therefore, articles for these also need to be created, and their names added to the navboxes.

Difficulties (shared names, etc.)

edit

The following list contains place names that are problematic.

Examples:

 1. where different places in Finland share a name, disambiguated one way at fi.wiki but differently (or not at all) at en.wiki;
 2. where a place is listed at en.wiki under a different name from its corresponding article at fi.wiki;
 3. where a place name may have been mistranslated, or previously confused with another place of a similar name.

Review of "Maalaiskunta" articles

edit

The following list of municipalities explicitly named "maalaiskunta" ("rural municipality") contains a mixture of:

 1. red links, i.e. that require a new article translated from fi.wiki;
 2. redirects, that require overwriting with a new article translated from fi.wiki;
 3. productive blue links, i.e. that link to the correct article.

The Action required: line indicates changes to apply, if any.

Stubs

edit

There are six main stubs to cover all geography articles about places in Finland:

There is also a stub specifically for lakes in Finland:

 • Finland-lake-stub

This section lists the navboxes for all regions in Finland, displaying municipalities (shown in red) without articles here at the en.Wikipedia.

Identify articles to create and redirects, dab pages & navboxes to update

edit

The following method is used to identify articles missing at en.wiki:

1a. Check the navbox for each region of Finland and add all red links into Articles to create from red links;  Done
1b. Check for red links in Maalaiskunta and add all red links into Articles to create from red links;  Done
1c. Check for red links in List of former municipalities of Finland missing in navboxes, and update Discrepancies;  Done
1d. Check for blue links that are redirects in List of former municipalities of Finland and update Articles to create from redirects (some of these will be municipalities ceded to the USSR in the 1940s); In progress
1e. Check for blue links in Maalaiskunta that link elsewhere and update Articles to create from redirects (some of these will be municipalities ceded to the USSR in the 1940s); icon ToDo

Search for a place name in both fi.wiki and en.wiki

edit

The following method is used to select articles for translation at en.wiki:

2. Copy the place name of an article identified as a candidate for creation;
3. Search for the place name at the fi.wiki to ensure there is an article there to translate;
4. If so, then search for the place name at the en.wiki by selecting only the containing <placename> option (to make sure the place name is not already covered in an article with a slightly different title; this approach also helps in identifying notable people born in that place, or other distinctive items such as churches, monuments, etc.);
5. If the place really isn't already covered in an existing article at the en-wiki, then proceed with creating a draft article, as follows:
5.0 Complete a row in the relevant table (if the Finnish name ends with the word "maalaiskunta" (= "rural municipality"), then check that the place name is listed in the en.wiki article titled Maalaiskunta; if it is, then keep the full original name when creating the corresponding article at the en.wiki, because that is the established practice for these articles);

Create new articles from scratch

edit

The following method is used to create articles missing at en.wiki:

5.1 Create a new user page, including the place name of the future article title, i.e. User:Pdebee/Placename;
5.2 Insert templates for Draft article, Use dmy dates and EngvarB;
5.3 Copy the source text from the fi.wiki;
5.4 Paste and save the above as-is into the draft en.wiki article;
5.5 Create some of the back matter section headings, mainly 'References' and 'External links';
5.6 Deactivate the original category templates;
5.7 Copy/paste the infobox from an existing article already translated;
5.8 Transfer details from the Finnish infobox into the English one (check for missing coordinates and location shields, and add these from online sources if necessary);
5.9 Translate the prose, keep all existing images and translate their captions;
5.10 Search the en.wiki for articles on Finnish notable people from that place, and include these in the 'Notable people' section; (select only the containing <placename> option to identify notable people born in that place, or other items such as churches, monuments, etc.)
5.11 Search the en.wiki for 'File:Placename' and include appropriate ones in a section entitled 'Places and events' (as above);
5.12 Check that the citations in the original Finnish article are functional and appropriate for use at the en-wiki:
a. Do the web links actually work? (no 404 errors);
b. Is the information available in English? (some of their statistical reports are often in Finnish, Swedish and English);
c. If a. and b. are negative, then search the Internet for appropriate sources on the place name and use these in citation templates or save them in the 'External links' section;
d. For printed sources (books, journals, newspapers), convert them into 'cite' templates and add the '|language= Finnish, Swedish, English |trans-title=' parameters;
5.13 Add a 'See also' section if appropriate;
5.14 Add a 'Further reading' section if appropriate;
5.15 Add the 'Municipalities of (Region)' navbox in the 'External links' section:
(or the Territories of Finland ceded to the USSR in the 1940s navbox, for those with a (*) in 'Notes:');
5.16 Add the Authority control template;
5.17 Add the appropriate 'category' templates, including name of current province, and:
5.18 Add the Finland-geo-stub template after two blank lines (if appropriate);
5.19 Click on 'Purge' option.
6. Prepare the draft article for publication in main article space, as follows:
7. Check that the article has gone blue in List of former municipalities of Finland.

Converting redirects

edit

The following method is used to convert redirects into new articles missing at en.wiki: Redirects are identified in task '1.d' above. They can be overwritten (see guidance here) to create the full article with the redirect's existing name, as follows:

 1. view the redirect page (for example: Heinjoki, which currently has: #REDIRECT Veshchevo);
 2. click on edit and remove #REDIRECT Veshchevo;
 3. apply 'draft' & 'in use' templates: Draft article, in use & under construction;
 4. copy the Finnish text, translate it and verify all sources/external links (probably over several edits);
 5. ensure it contains text about, and links to, Veshchevo;
 6. update talk page with translated page template;
 7. remove 'draft' & 'in use' templates.
