US Senators seek Nigeria's Designation as CPC religious intolerance
edit-The Guardian News
editOn the 2nd of July 2022, Josh Hawley, Marco Rubio, Mike Braun, James Inhofe and Tom Cotton, five US senators challenged Antony Blinken, Secretary of State to designate Nigeria as a CPC (Country of Particular Concern) because of suspected Christian genocides in the Northern parts of Nigeria.
Regret was expressed by US senators that the recent high-profile acts of violence experienced by Nigerian Christians. Ted Cruz, Texan US Senator stated that “Nigerian Officials are ignoring or facilitating the killing of Christians by Islamist groups as a mass slaughter”. Also President Trump ordered the military to prepare for action in Nigeria to take down Islamist militant groups. In response, The Government of Nigeria and spokespersons of religious organization in Nigeria have rejected the allegations of Christian genocides and religious intolerance in Nigeria. The Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kaduna State, Joseph Heyab dismissed claims of Christian persecution. Daniel Bwala, The Official Spokesperson of the presidency has also said that “the military threats from President Donald Trump is based on misleading reports and appears to be part of Trump’s style of going forceful in order to force a sit-down and have a conversation”. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also rejected the designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and has promised to work with the US Government and other foreign partners to ensure cooperation on the protection of communities irrespective of their fates. Nigeria’s foreign allies, namely China and the European Union have expressed their full support for Nigeria’s sovereignty and opposes foreign interference over alleged Christian genocide and persecution claims by the US.
Substantial evidence shows that there have been cases of religiously targeted violence and has prompted political actions in the US and EU; however, whether te situation legally qualifies as "genocide". The Nigerian Government needs to implement immediate protective measure and accountability efforts for all vulnerable communities irrespective of their religious affiliations or creed.
