Sharif Jamil

Sharif Jamil is a Bangladeshi environment activist and civil society leader widely recognized for his work on environmental justice, river protection, climate justice advocacy, and energy governance in Bangladesh and abroad. He has played a significant role in campaigns aimed at protecting rivers & wetlands.[1], forests and wildlife, agricultural lands, biodiversity and the rights of indigenous and local communities affected by environmental degradation and climate change.

Over the past two decades, Sharif Jamil has led and coordinated numerous civic initiatives and environmental movements in Bangladesh, working through a range of national, regional and global platforms to promote sustainable development, ecological conservation, and climate accountability.

Career and Activism

Sharif Jamil has been actively involved in organizing campaigns and advocacy initiatives in collaboration with government, civil society organizations, local communities, and youth in Bangladesh. His work focuses on the protection and conservation of rivers and wetlands, environment and climate justice[2], the conservation of forests, wildlife, biodiversity, and the protection of agricultural land, fish resources, and livelihoods. He has also advocated for the rights of Indigenous peoples and has opposed the expansion of fossil fuels while promoting renewable energy at the national, regional, and global levels.

Organizations and Leadership Roles

Sharif Jamil has served in leadership and coordinating positions in a number of environmental and civil society organizations in Bangladesh and beyond. His roles have included Buriganga Riverkeepe[3], Coordinator[4] of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Member Secretary[5] of Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), Executive Director[6] of the Blue Planet Initiative (BPI), and Coordinator of the Save Indigenous Environment Movement.

Sharif Jamil has also been associated with a number of national, regional, and international organizations working on environmental protection, human rights, and climate justice. He has been a member of the Council Board[7] and Board of Directors[8] of Waterkeeper Alliance, a member of South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR)[9], an executive member of the National Committee for Saving the Sundarbans (NCSS), and an executive member of the National River Saving Movement (JNRA). He previously served as the general secretary of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA)[10]
