GenScript Biotech, fully known as GenScript Biotech Corporation, usually referred to as simply GenScript, is an American biotech company. It was co-founded in 2002 in Piscataway, New Jersey by Frank Zhang, Sally Wang, and Larry Wang. The company's operations are divided into life-science services and products, biologics CDMO, and industrial enzymes.
Outside of the United States, GenScript has established presences in China, Singapore, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, among others.[9]
History
editGenScript was formed in 2002 in Piscataway, New Jersey.[10] In 2009, the company secured a $15 million investment from KPCB China Fund.[11]
In 2014, the unit Legend Biotech was founded.[12] In 2015, GenScript went public on the SEHK.[13]GenScript fully acquired CustomArray in 2017.[14] In 2020, its subsidiary Probio was launched.[7]
After the COVID-19 pandemic began, GenScript collaborated with Duke-NUS Medical School to develop a way to test for antibodies in a person that could neutralize the coronavirus.[15] On November 6, the cPass test received emergency use authorization from the United States Food and Drug Administration.[16]
GenScript opened a 50,000-square-foot facility near its New Jersey headquarters in 2021 for developing new vaccines. Their cell and gene therapy manufacturing facility became the company's first automated plant in the country.[4] In 2022, it opened a protein and gene manufacturing facility in Singapore.[17]
In May 2024, the United States House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Director of National Intelligence for a briefing on whether the Chinese government had any undue influence over GenScript and its units, Bestzyme, Legend Biotech, and ProBio.[18][19] Consequently, GenScript's stock fell on the news. A statement from GenScript denied the connection and said the company was not under any government's control.[20]
Operations
editGenScript is headquartered in Piscataway, New Jersey.[4] It established presences in the United States, China, Singapore, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, among others.[9]
GenScript's operations are divided into life-science services and products, biologics CDMO, and industrial enzymes.[21]
The company was founded by Frank Zhang,[1] Sally Wang,[2] and Larry Wang.[3] As of 2026, leadership included Robin Meng, chairman;[22] Sherry Shao, rotating CEO;[5] and Ray Chen, Life Science Group president.[4] Its scientific advisory board includes George Church, Carl June, and David R. Liu, as of 2026.[23]
GenScript has operations in over 100 countries and over 250,000 customers, as of 2025. That year, its revenue was $959.5 million and it had over 6,165 employees.[24]
Subsidiaries
editThe company's main subsidiaries include the biologics CDMO named ProBio (launched 2020),[7][25] and industrial enzymes producer Bestzyme (launched 2013).[18][26]
In 2024, ProBio opened a manufacturing facility in Hopewell, New Jersey. The year prior, it had raised $224 million in its third fundraising round in two years.[7]
GenScript's shares of Legend Biotech fell in 2024 to 47.6%, causing the company to lose its status as majority shareholder.[27]
Legend Biotech
editLegend Biotech was founded in 2014.[12] Legend Biotech was later listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol "LEGN".[28]
In 2017, the Chinese government accepted Legend's application for running clinical trials for its blood cancer treatment,[29] with its IND application approved by the CFDA.[30] In the same year, Legend entered into a collaboration agreement with Janssen Biotech to share chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-T) treatments in the US and China.[12][31]
In 2022, Carvykti, a CAR-T cell therapy developed by Janssen Biotech and Legend Biotech,[32] was approved by the US FDA for the treatment of multiple myeloma in adult patients.[33]
In November 2023, Legend Biotech and Novartis signed an out-license deal to develop and manufacture Legend's CAR-T therapies. Novartis will pay the New-Jersey–based biotech $100 million upfront.[27]
Legend Biotech is no longer a subsidiary of GenScript and the latter is no longer majority shareholder as of 2024.[5]
Production
editResearch
editGenScript reported in August 2017 early results for its experimental gene therapy on an aggressive form of blood cancer. In May of the following year, the FDA approved its testing on Americans, the first Chinese-developed gene therapy to receive approval.[12] China’s Center for Drug Evaluation accepted GenScript's clinical trial application in December 2017 for its drug to treat multiple myeloma.[35]
GenScript provides its clients with customized synthetic genes and proteins for research purposes.[35] This includes genes and proteins which allowed scientists in 2022 to develop research variants of COVID-19.[36]
