Helo Pawb!
editHello, I’m Keiron. I live in the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales and contribute to Wikipedia in a personal capacity. My professional and personal interests include Population health, local history, and the cultural, political, and social development of communities in Wales.
Part of my approach here is shaped by a belief in radical transparency. By being open about who I am, my background, and the influences on my work, I hope to make clear the perspective I bring when contributing to Wikipedia. This does not mean I dismiss or undervalue anonymity - on the contrary, anonymity remains vital for many editors, particularly those writing under difficult political, social, or professional circumstances.
For me, honesty about my own position feels necessary when shaping articles that touch on contested histories, political struggles, or community memory. I believe that acknowledging where I come from, and the commitments that inform my work, helps build trust with readers and fellow editors. Radical transparency is not about self-promotion but about accountability: ensuring that when I edit, I do so in good faith, with integrity, and without hiding the influences that guide me.
If you believe that my biases have impacted my judgement to provide a neutral context to an article that I have contributed to, please feel free to point it out at my Talk page.
Why do I do it
editI am here to help build an Encyclopedia, but to go into detail I’ve grown increasingly disillusioned with the current state of the World Wide Web - a space that was once seen as a place for the free and open sharing of knowledge, but is now too often shaped by commercial interests, misinformation, and closed systems. This move away from openness weakens the original promise of the internet as a tool for collective learning and democratic participation.
Despite these challenges, I still see the computer as a radical form of human liberation - a tool with the potential to empower individuals and communities by giving them greater control over information and communication. When used openly and responsibly, technology can help break down barriers and promote equality.
In this context, Wikipedia remains a valuable resource - a collaborative and transparent project that reflects the early values of the web. It shows how communities can come together to share knowledge and support each other’s learning.
My involvement is also influenced by the radical Welsh tradition, especially the spirit of the Valleys, where people have long depended on self-reliance, mutual support, and a strong commitment to education and social fairness. This tradition values shared knowledge and collective responsibility, ideas that align closely with open knowledge projects.
With the rise of authoritarianism and fascism in many parts of the world, including my own, I believe that free and open access to trustworthy information is one of the best tools we have to fight misinformation and intolerance.
By making knowledge available to everyone, we improve understanding, help prevent the repetition of past mistakes, and enable us to stand on the shoulders of giants. Projects like Wikipedia play an important role in ensuring societal progress and protecting democracy.
In short, my work is part of this tradition - ensuring that knowledge remains accessible to all and used to support the betterment of society.
