Klokočevac is a village in the municipality of Majdanpek, Serbia. According to the 2022 census, the village has a population of 408 people.[1]
Geography
editThe village is located 32 km from Majdanpek on the banks of the Porečka river, the western slope of the Veliki Greben mountain, and the eastern slope of the Liškovac mountain. It has 8 distinct parts called kulmje: Zbeg, Zeknja, Zminje, Kamenica, Kuratori, Mare and Prislopa. It is considered a dispersed village.[2]
History
editThe area of Klokočevac has evidence of bronze age settlement. The village is mentioned in 16th century records as uninhabited, as numbering 14 households in 1783 during the Austro-Hungarian period, and as having 142 inhabitants in 1893. The latter half of the 18th century saw a influx of population from Berzasca in Romanian Banat, Luka near Bor, and Rabrovo near Kučevo.[2]
In 1934, construction on the village's Eastern Orthodox church started, and the village would go on to get power, a water supply, and a phone connection in 1967, 1968 and 1984, respectively.[2]
In 2023, a Dejan Paunović from Klokočevac was allegedly murdered by his friend and un unnamed 17-year old at the behest of his wife. The discovery of the crime was aided by village gossip about the wife's supposed marital infidelity.[3]
Etymology
editAccording to tradition, the name of the village comes from the word for the European bladdernut, klokoč.[2]
Economy
editThe village economy is primarily based on cattle farming, and dairy products are sold at markets in Majdanpek and Donji Milanovac.[2] The village also produces firewood,[2] and charcoal production family businesses are in operation in the areas around the village.[4]
An operating base of the Zaječar Road Company is located in the village, as well as a post office.[2]
Culture
editThe village slava is Đurđevdan. Village fairs (vašari) are organised in May and August, and the village's Liberation Day, September 7, is also celebrated. The village has a memorial plaque to the victims of World War I, as well as a community health centre and a memorial well dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the National Liberation War.[2]
The village has an elementary school which was founded in 1871 and rebuilt after World War II. I has two teachers and operates as a branch of the Vuk Karadžić Elementary School from Donji Milanovac.[5]
