The Nature Conservancy

- The Nature Conservancy’s Block Island Program actively manages over 2,000 acres of wildlife habitat across the island.

- The island serves as a critical wildlife hotspot to provide refuge for various plants and animals that have largely disappeared from other parts of Southern New England over the last several decades.

Block Island History

- Between 1690 and 1704, the town was invaded four times by privateers during the war between England and France. Even the famous pirate Captain Kidd visited in 1699.

- Although Giovanni de Verrazzano first noted the island's existence in 1524, it was named after Adrian Block, a Dutch navigator who re-discovered it in 1614.

-Due to dangerous shoals and ledges, dozens of ships wrecked near the island before the construction of its two famous lighthouses the North Light and the Southeast Light
