Club career

edit

Santos

edit

Fernandez joined the Santos youth academy at the age of 7 and debuted for the senior team in 1988 at age 16. He quickly established himself as a creative force in midfield and earned his first Brazil call-up while at the club.

Boca Juniors

edit

In 1991, he transferred to Argentina Boca Juniors. During four seasons in Argentina, he became a fan favorite and was regarded as one of the best playmakers in South America.

Real Madrid

edit

Fernandez moved to Spain Real Madrid in 1995. He won multiple domestic and international titles during his seven-year stay, including two La Liga championships and two UEFA Champions League titles. He formed a memorable midfield trio with Redondo and Raúl.

Juventus

edit

In 2002, Fernandez signed for Italy Juventus, where he spent the final four years of his professional career. He helped the team win two Serie A titles before retiring in 2006.

International career

edit

Fernandez earned 86 caps and scored 14 goals for the Brazil Brazil national team between 1990 and 2002. He was part of the squads for the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, winning silver in 1998 and lifting the Copa América in 1997.

Style of play

edit

A classic number 10, Fernandez was praised for his technical ability, accurate passing, set-piece skill, and football IQ. He often dictated the tempo of the game and was a natural leader on the pitch.
