The road intersects with the Peak Downs Highway as it enters Mackay.
Mackay to Townsville
editThis section travels through a mixture of timbered and open farming country until it reaches the sugar cane fields around Proserpine, where it passes the intersection with State Route 59 to Airlie Beach. It then proceeds through mixed farming country to the port city of Bowen. From there it runs through similar country until it reaches the sugar cane areas of Home Hill and Ayr on the banks of the Burdekin River. A short stretch of road through hilly country leads to Townsville, passing to the east of Mount Elliot in the Bowling Green Bay National Park.
