In April 1979, LTJG Beverly Kelley became the first woman to command a Coast Guard cutter, the USCGC Cape Newhagen. Two years earlier, the Coast Guard experimented with assigning women to sea-going ships. The high-endurance Coast Guard cutters Morgenthau and Gallatin received 10 enlisted women and two female officers each.
Kelley was one of those officers. According to Coast Guard historical documents, a great deal of opposition accompanied the trial run–including concern from the wives of men aboard the ships. Some seamen reportedly even commented, "There goes the neighborhood.”

The Coast Guard motto is Semper paratus (always ready), but was it ready for Beverly Kelley? This month the curly-haired lieutenant (junior grade) became the first woman ever to command a U.S. military vessel. "I wanted it, I asked for it and now I'm ready to go and do it," she declared. 
Kelley may have been rarin' to go, but her man-of-war, the Cape Newagen, was not. "My sick baby," as she fondly describes the 95-foot search-and-rescue cutter, has been high and dry-docked since it was rammed by a freighter two months ago. So Bev assumed command on terra firma at a Coast Guard station near Honolulu instead of aboard ship, as is the custom. She later confessed that one leg shook uncontrollably (but invisibly, since she was in trousers). After issuing her first order ("Chief, take charge of ship's company and dismiss them"), the 26-year-old skipper attended a reception and shyly read aloud a wire from her folks addressed to "The First Old Lady of the Sea."

In the final moments of Joshua Taylor’s moving documentary Dita & The Family Business, the film-maker takes you through the halls and back rooms of the penthouse apartment where his great grandparents, Edwin and Belle Goodman, and grandparents, Andrew and Nena Goodman lived. This sprawling home happened to be located on the top floor of Bergdorf Goodman, the store the family owned. Seeing the grand penthouse vacant conjures up a feeling of nostalgia, not so much for a particular time or place, but for a bygone way of life that mixed the private and public in a heady, exotic and glamorous swirl.
