Jorge L. Barrios

Jorge Luis Barrios (born 1977, Mérida, Venezuela) is a Venezuelan-American geoscientist, geomechanics specialist, business development executive, and academic. He is known for his work in reservoir geomechanics, carbon capture and storage (CCUS), geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, and subsurface risk management. He currently serves as Global Business Development Manager and Geomechanics Subject Matter Expert at Stratum Reservoir and as Adjunct Faculty at The Ohio State University.

Early Life and Education

Barrios was born in Mérida, Venezuela, in 1977. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering from the University of the Andes (Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela). He later obtained a Master's degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Zulia.

He holds a Ph.D. in Management from Rafael Belloso Chacín University, completed postdoctoral studies in Data Science, and earned an MBA in Business Analytics from The Ohio State University. He also completed advanced training in geomechanics through Heriot-Watt University.

Career PDVSA

Barrios began his professional career with Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), where he worked from 2005 to 2017 in geoscience and reservoir development roles. During this period, he participated in conventional and unconventional reservoir projects, hydraulic fracturing programs, wellbore stability studies, and geomechanical modeling initiatives.

Academic and Research Activities

Between 2014 and 2018, he served as professor and researcher at Venezuelan universities, focusing on geomechanics, data analytics, and subsurface uncertainty management. He also contributed to technical education programs associated with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

GeoKnowledge LLC

In 2020, Barrios founded GeoKnowledge LLC, a consulting company focused on geoscience analytics, environmental compliance, carbon management, and energy transition projects.

Battelle Memorial Institute

From 2021 to 2025, Barrios worked at Battelle Memorial Institute as Lead Geoscientist and Business Developer. His responsibilities included supporting DOE-funded initiatives related to carbon sequestration, geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, and subsurface risk assessment.

He participated in projects associated with CarbonSAFE and Utah FORGE and contributed to strategic business development activities in emerging energy technologies.

Stratum Reservoir

Since 2025, Barrios has served as Global Business Development Manager at Stratum Reservoir, where he focuses on expanding the company's activities in CCUS, geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, and critical minerals. His work combines technical expertise in geomechanics and reservoir characterization with commercial strategy and industry partnerships.

Professional Activities

Barrios has been active in several international professional organizations, including:

American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA) American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Project Management Institute (PMI)

He serves as Chair of the ARMA Technical Committee on CCUS, Geothermal, and Hydrogen.
