editChartis was founded in July 2001 in Chicago by Ken Graboys and Ethan Arnold as a healthcare-focused consulting firm providing advisory services to hospitals and health systems.[2]
Over time, the firm expanded its client base to include healthcare payers, technololy companies, and investment organization.
Acquisitions
editAfter operating for years as a traditional healthcare consultancy, in 2014 the firm refined its business model and expanded its service offerings by acquiring Aspen Advisors, an IT strategy consulting firm. Several acquisitions followed.

Chartis provides advisory services to healthcare providers, health plans, and private equity investors.[21] The firm organizes its consulting practice around several transformation domains.[22][23][24][25][26]
For healthcare providers, Chartis offers services across four primary areas. Strategic transformation services include strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions advisory, academic medical center alignment, value-based care, and oncology advisory services. Performance transformation services encompass clinical and financial performance improvement, revenue cycle transformation, merger integration, care delivery, consumer access, physician enterprise advisory, and clinical quality and reliability. Digital and technology transformation services include health information technology strategy, clinical and business technology innovation, data analytics and architecture, and enterprise cybersecurity.[27]
For health plans and payers, Chartis provides advisory services through its HealthScape Advisors[28] line of business, which focuses on payer strategy and operations and pharmacy benefit management strategy, procurement, and optimization.[29]
For private equity investors, the firm offers transaction diligence, platform growth strategy, value optimization, and exit planning services. Chartis also provides strategic communications and change management services through its Jarrard line of business, and medical staff services optimization through Greeley.[30][31]
Centers and affiliated organizations
editThe Chartis Center for Rural Health was established in 2015 following the acquisition of iVantage Health Analytics. The center produces research and hospital performance assessments using the Hospital Strength INDEX® methodology and publishes rankings of rural and community hospitals.[32]
In 2024, representatives of the center testified before the United States Senate Committee on Finance on issues affecting rural healthcare providers.[33][34]
The Chartis Center for Health Equity and Belonging was established in 2023 to conduct research and advisory work related to healthcare disparities and equity.
