When both armies had advanced close to each other, the Goths played for time by challenging the Romans to a single combat. Artabazes killed Valaris the champion of the Goths with his long spear, but was mortally wounded in the process because he pushed forward with his horse against the upright spear. The medics carried him to the rear to tend his wounds in vain; he died three days later. This was a serious blow to the Romans because they lost an able commander.
