crediting TOG for license?
editA recent edit asserts that Xft "uses the MIT/X license that The Open Group applied after the post X11R6.4 license restoration", which doesn't appear likely because the earliest commit (in XFree86) identified as follows:
* $XFree86$ * * Copyright \?A9 2000 Keith Packard, member of The XFree86 Project, Inc. * * Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell this software and its * documentation for any purpose is hereby granted without fee, provided that * the above copyright notice appear in all copies and that both that * copyright notice and this permission notice appear in supporting * documentation, and that the name of Keith Packard not be used in * advertising or publicity pertaining to distribution of the software without * specific, written prior permission. Keith Packard makes no * representations about the suitability of this software for any purpose. It * is provided "as is" without express or implied warranty.
There's no mention of The Open Group there, and given the relationship with XFree86, it doesn't appear plausible that XFree86 would use a license (written) by The Open Group. TEDickey (talk) 19:08, 3 June 2026 (UTC)
The X11R6.5.1 tree doesn't include Xft. TEDickey (talk) 19:09, 3 June 2026 (UTC)
- According to https://tools.spdx.org/app/check_license/, the actual Xft license is "HPND-sell-variant", while the edit points to "MIT-open-group" (a difference) TEDickey (talk) 19:09, 4 June 2026 (UTC)
