Refraining from saying "Ortega's Wednesday"

edit

This character is often referred to as "Ortega's Wednesday", which makes sense. It's simple and everyone immediately knows what character you're talking about. It also follows the format used on pages like Joker (The Dark Knight). But I avoided it for several reasons:

  • The character is a collaborative effort, and does not belong solely to Ortega. Obviously she played the character, and was a large creative voice in her creation. But Gough and Millar designed her, Burton directed her, Atwood designed her clothes, screenplay writers wrote her dialogue, etc.
  • The character has been played by four different actresses in the series, so assigning sole possession of her to just one of them seems wrong.
  • I like to think that characters go beyond their creators and are more like ideas.
  • Saying Ortega's Wednesday makes it unclear whether you're talking about the character or Ortega's performance as the character.
  • The page for Gwen Stacy (Spider-Verse) doesn't refer to Gwen as "Steinfeld's Gwen", proving it can be done.
  • No disrespect to Ortega and this is just personal bias speaking but I find how much people overlap the character and her performance to be slightly grating. Actress has also been in some controversy lately. Separating art from artist can't hurt, right?
  • Most sources just call the character "Wednesday".

It was easy enough for me to just switch between calling her "the character" and "Wednesday" depending on if the sentence made it obvious which version of Wednesday I was talking about. I used "Ricci's Wednesday" once but I might remove it. Similarly, I would suggest against renaming the page to Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) or something - no other character adaptation articles are named like that. But I don't own the article, so if there's disagreement, feel free to voice it here and discuss. HalfHazard98 (talk) 11:56, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
