Ref quality
editRef 6 is a bit dubious. An info pamphlet produced for the public. Some refs to peer-reviewed volcanology journals would be better, for such an important bit of info. The ratio of CO vs CO2 in eruptions should be mentioned. The total CO+CO2 emitted from undersea, where most geological CO2 is to be found, volcanic activity is unknown. 27.33.251.24 (talk) 02:57, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
- This article contains very little science, and it's somewhat haphazard in it's presentation. I concure that it's pamphlet like in it's structure, but only qualifies as a curiosity.
- In particular the low Ph gases like SO2 are practically ignored with in favor of the chemically stable trace gas CO2. Ocean acidification, acid rain, albedo, and the impact on life are being misrepresented. 136.62.193.12 (talk) 23:03, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Note that Ref 6 is now a different reference but the reference above still needs to be changed.DrVolatiles (talk) 21:51, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
Volcanic gas evaluation
edit
The lead doesn't indicate any clear introduction to the article, giving no clear indication of the content other than the title. It is narrow and is formatted more like a dictionary entry rather than an informative article. The lead is vague and misleading, mentioning the three sources of volcanic gas but doesn't actually mention two out of the three topics at all, almost as if each paragraph were its own article. Overall the content is relevant and informative, however the editors didn't include any new data regarding subaerial volcanic emissions past 2017, so more accurate and recent research should be added. The article represents death statistics for deaths caused by volcanic gases which usually go unrepresented, but is biased using phrases like "dangerous" and "unfortunately." The editors kept an unbiased position until the section Volcanic Gases and Volcano Monitoring, where the main focus were the hazards and dangers that volcano monitoring present, which should be up for interpretation for the reader. The article's position is overall neutral, not persuading the reader in any direction, just providing information, though the data presented from the courses could have had more depth. The article was lacking science, giving no scientific "why" just data with no explanation. The editors provide multiple credible sources, however the information doesn't reflect the research. The citations offer many viewpoints with different authors from accredited institutions but the data, while being relevant, isn't applicable anymore, with references dating back to 1983. Volcanic gas is presented with images related to the topics, however the images don't provide any understanding or any substantial meaning. The editors chose images depicting lava fields, eruptions, and volcanic smog but the images were only seemingly placed for visual appeal. There were too many, few depicting essential information, obviously only put to fill space. After reviewing the Talk page for Volcanic gas I concurred that other readers take the same position, agreeing that the information excluded important topics such as CO+Co2 emission from undersea and misrepresented the effect volcanic gases have on human life. The rating for Volcanic gas on Wikipedia's scale is Start-Class. I agree with this rating and that there is room for improvement, including a layout that blends together for seemingly, utilizing more of the data available in the sources, and removing bias. Overall, the article provided a general description of volcanic gases, monitoring, remissions, and gas release, with potential for more in depth research.
