Title change

edit

The term "BritCard" isn't used in government communication nor from the PM, from what I can see. Such as https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-digital-id-scheme-to-be-rolled-out-across-uk which mentions "digital ID" numerous times with no mention of BritCard. Possibly the name originated from https://www.labourtogether.uk/all-reports/britcard and some of the papers ran with it. Whatever the case, I don't think it's the most appropriate title for this page. Willing to wait and see because of WP:COMMONNAME, though. Here for the one billionth edit (talk) 10:53, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

BritCard (its also often written 'Brit card') appears to be a common colloqial name for it and is used in many of the sources. From what I understand the name 'britcard' does come from labour together. It will NOT be officially called britcard (https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/25498205.labours-compulsory-id-will-not-known-britcard/), but as there doesn't currently seem to be an official name, and any alternative title would be unintuative and speculative (eg 'UK Compulsary Digital ID'). But google trends does show that 'britcard' and 'brit card' get significantly less traffic than 'digital id' in the UK (https://trends.google.co.uk/trends/explore?date=now%207-d&geo=GB&q=britcard,digital%20id,brit%20card&hl=en-GB), so perhaps a move is in order. Yes - I realised this shortly after I started the article! Proposed United Kingdom national digital identity? No Swan So Fine (talk) 21:26, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think that Proposed United Kingdom digital ID may be better. National seems redundant and most sources call it a 'digital ID' (eg https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn832y43ql5o). Horsers (talk) 21:30, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Agreed - it is not called BritCard, it is not even a card. DarylKayes (talk) 06:20, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
As above, the title should be "Digital ID in the UK" or "UK Digital ID". There isn't a card, BritCard isn't the official name, and many of the components are already up and running rather than "proposed". 209.93.202.123 (talk) 09:03, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Personally I would hesistate to say that it is up and running, as this scheme is specifically mandatory and would create a national database for it. This is the pertinent part of the project, and does not currently exist. Horsers (talk) 11:42, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
The new bits are the wallet on smartphones and the mandation for "right to work". The Government Digital Service has been up and running for some time, and, as far as anyone knows, the new bits will be built on top of that. 2A0A:EF40:42:BA00:1181:6B19:502E:40F4 (talk) 13:50, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, WP:COMMONNAME leads to some unexpected article names. How about "Pasty tax" or even "The Day the Music Died". "Brexit" was attacked as an article name in the early days, but it stuck, and now is even listed as a noun in dictionaries. -- DeFacto (talk). 15:29, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Implemented - Retitled article from "BritCard" to "UK Digital ID" as discussed - it is not called "BritCard", is not a card and is most commonly known as "Digital ID" in UK media and internet searches DarylKayes (talk) 07:10, 12 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Keir Starmer

edit

This isn't an article about Keir Starmer. The Digital ID programme started before he was in office and will continue after he leaves. S C Cheese (talk) 09:05, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

@S C Cheese, I agree. -- DeFacto (talk). 14:39, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

opinions in the reception section

edit

In the reception section a lot of different bodies of talked about and not all of them are up to standard as trustworthy sources, a lot of them are quite small and probably should not be used to represent the views of large groups, I feel that some editors may have attempted to find sources that validate their own opinions and put those in there I think these should be reviewed ~2026-16183-05 (talk) 21:00, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
