Simultaneous Article Creation
At the same time as the Summer Wars article that is presently up was being created, I was also at work on a version. I would like to try and compare work with the present version, but I am unsure as to how to post my version for comparison. As I already have a complete article, with additional detail that is not presented in the presently uploaded version, I would appreciate it if there were a way for my work to not go to waste. - Sorry for beating you to it. :) Is your version in a sandbox on Wikipedia? If so, can you link it? Arsonal (talk) 03:50, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding. Yes, my version is available on my sandbox for checking. I have already begun integrating the information into your version of the article, but I'll hold off for the moment so you can check out what I did. Would you like to collaborate on this article? I feel sure that if we work together, we can get this to B-class or higher in no time.
- Here is my version. LainEverliving LainEverloving (talk) 06:50, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- I went ahead and integrated your writing into the article. It seems like you were able to find a lot more news sources that I did, so that's a good thing. Arsonal (talk) 21:11, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- Good. Nice work on the additional box office and Locarno data. I didn't spot those things on my version. However, I would like to integrate the section about the animators in the Production section. I wrote the existing version on my Sandbox, and if I can find sources other than ANN Encyclopedia, I want to add it to the main article. I assume the reason you did not add it was due to the lack of cited sources, which I understand. Nonetheless, it is relevant information of the same caliber as listing animators on the Disney Feature Animation film articles, so including it is important. Finally, I want to try and get some of the quotes from The Japan Times review back in regarding the film's actual artistic merit as a movie. I consider these quotes more relevant in terms of evaluating the film's quality than the more theoretical and hypothetical quotes you chose to include, since they directly describe the contributions to the movie by the director, writer, and animators, as well as identifying the contemporary relevance of the work. I am basing this assessment off of the quotations used in other articles dealing with film. Perhaps a combination of quotations would be the best way to go. Let me know what you think. Twitch Film as reliable source
I noticed the addition of two reviews from Twitch Film and was wondering if it falls (or does not fall) into the category of self-published sources. The only claim of expertise that I can find on creator Todd Brown is his involvement with a mini studio company. Both have been mentioned in The Times, but I haven't been able to find much more from major news sources. Even if Todd Brown can then be considered an expert on the subject, I haven't been able to find any claims to notability for Guillem Rosset, the second reviewer, so I'm not sure that review can be included. Arsonal (talk) 07:03, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
- I think it is probably okay, given that anime-related articles (including those of Good status) regularly include reviews from prolific internet sources. For example, Anime New Network is cited repeatedly for reviews, even though the reviewers themselves have no outstanding personal credentials besides working for the website. In the case of Twitch Film, as you've noted the site has been mentioned in The Times, and is cited on a weekly basis on IMDb and other movie resources. In my personal experience as a film student, it is well known as a source for festival reviews and coverage of independent or foreign films, and is sometimes cited in class by my professors as a reliable source. This is not a blog we are considering, but a used and respected web resource for film. The website itself is the source of notability, more so than the reviewers who work for / own it. Given that a reviewer himself / herself need not be necessarily famous to be cited, but merely work for a notable source publication, I would argue that the Twitch Film reviews qualify for reliability and notability. I am of course open to further discussion, and as the Guillem Rosset review is somewhat redundant in that is adds relatively little that has not been stated elsewhere, a good case for a lack of notability would convince me to fully support its removal. - LainEverliving LainEverloving (talk) 23:55, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Digimon
Shouldn't there be some sort of mention to the fact this is the same director as the digimon movie and that the plot is a virtual remake? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Owlofcreamcheese (talk • contribs) 23:30, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- For the Digimon reference, you may have to find a reliable, third-party source. Darth Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 00:01, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
- I have found an article on Anime Vice that compares the two. Would that count as a reliable source? This is the article: http://www.animevice.com/news/summer-wars-vs-digimon-our-war-game/5100/
Another link: http://www.theazotaku.com/2009/12/summer-wars.html
And another on comparisons, scene-by-scene: http://actar.wordpress.com/2011/02/03/summer-wars-versus-the-second-digimon-movie/ ggctuk (2005) (talk) 21:31, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
- Um, the sources are all blogs, and they normally cannot be used as reliable sources unless they are official websites, such as Funimation. So, none of those would not count as reliable, third-party sources. Darth Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 22:18, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
- Fair enough. Can we use a magazine as a source? Because NEO issue 82 also points out the similarities. ggctuk (2005) (talk) 18:50, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
- Yes. Neo Magazine counts as a third-party reliable source, and it does not need to be verified any further. Darth Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 21:57, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
- Here's what I have quickly put together:
- Yes. Neo Magazine counts as a third-party reliable source, and it does not need to be verified any further. Darth Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 21:57, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
NEO magazine noted the similarities between Summer Wars and a previous work of Hosoda, Digimon Adventure: Our War Game, noting that the latter was "plainly a prototype" for Summer Wars.
Obviously this is rough, but once we polish this up, where, if it isn't rewritten, should this be inserted into the article? into the reviews section? Or some place else? ggctuk (2005) (talk) 16:28, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
- The Digimon thing should go into the production section as it was one of the influences during production. Darth Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 19:23, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
- Give me some time to reword this bit. As it stands it would feel awkward going into the production section. ggctuk (2005) (talk) 19:57, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
Copyedit March 2011
Hi
During the copyedit some things came to light that may need attention:
- Lead
- "With the aid of upper-classman Natsuki Shinohara's" - not sure what this is, if it is someone from school in a higher class, or referring to an upper-class person.
- Plot
- "professor who has been gone for ten years." - Gone from where?
- Box office performance
- "..United States the film grossed $1,412 in its opening.." - were the figures really that low? If so should this not be quantified by "United States box office takings were not so good with the film grossing..." or "something similar?
- "had grossed $80,678 in North America." - This includes Canada, Mexico, etc.? North_America#Countries_and_territories - also first para next section.
- Film festival screenings
- "Summer Wars had its North American premiere" - The previous section says that the first North American screening was going to be in Chicago, but it says here it was in NY?
- "dub of the film premiered at the New York International Children's Film Festival on November 20, 2010" - that page says the film festival takes place in March every year.
- Critical response
- "establish himself as truly a master story teller." - The ref here was exactly the same as the next one. Both were from the Brown page [Our thanks to Guillem Rosset for the following review.]" . This is not by Brown at all it seems...I have combined them both in to one ref. Care must be taken here, this site appears to be owned by Brown but he is publishing reviews in an almost IMDB like format.
- Accolades
- "The film was screened at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival and the Leeds International Film Festival.[1][2]" are not really accolades?
- Notes
- Ensure that quotations are correctly punctuated. If the original has a comma it goes inside " ," if not it goes outside " ", same with periods.
- Dates using the American method should have commas: "April 1, 2010 was" should be "April 1, 2010, was".
- Accolades - one paragraph was very long so I separated them to leave the NY reviews as one block para.
Differences Between Theatrical and Blu-Ray Release
I can't state with absolute certainty as I do not have both copies in front of me, however I do recall a moment during my cinema viewing of Summer Wars that differs to that of the Blu-Ray.
The night before the grand-mother dies the 'Love Machine' A.I. makes some investigations and discovers the cardiac monitor (indicated via the family crest). It then turns that monitor off.
This is not shown on the blu-ray edition and I cannot find any details on the internet as to why the edit was made (or if this is indeed the case). Could anyone else confirm or deny this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.0.97.236 (talk) 19:27, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
- Did it actually turn it off? or is that only implied in the theatrical version? I cannot speak for the Blu-Ray version since I have the DVD version and we actually see Love Machine discover the cardiac monitor, although we don't see it turn the monitor off. ggctuk (2005) (talk) 20:12, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
- The scene where Love Machine turns off Sakae's monitor is not used in either version, so it is pretty safe to assume that it should not be included in the article and both versions contain the same scene. In any case, differences between film releases would have to be backed up by a third-party reliable sources to verify those claims. Hope this sorts everything out. Darth Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 22:21, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
- I cannot recall if Love Machine turns off the monitor, but the whole tracing scene did not happen on the blu-ray. I do however agree that until a reliable source is found it should not be added to the article. At the very least I am happy that I didn't just dream up the whole thing! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.0.97.236 (talk) 21:48, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Precognition?
This anime has themes that could be easily connected to the real-world Stuxnet / Duqu nuclear attack military malware saga on one hand, and GPS-hacking on the other hand, e.g. the RQ-170 drone's recent forced landing in Iran.
Since the Duqu saga started in mid-2007 at the latest (but was not publicly discovered until late 2011), one must wonder if the animators had some prior knowedge to create something so strange or unrealistic at the time? 82.131.128.240 (talk) 17:42, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
- It's not exactly a new or unique concept, having been obviously influenced by WarGames and Digimon Adventure: Our War Game. 66.220.139.58 (talk) 10:25, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
