A question about re-established states.
editThe Sultanate of Darfur briefly returned after its disestablishment in 1874. My question is, what does this mean regarding categories? Should I add it to the categories about years when polities were established and disestablished when it comes to its reestablishment and second disestablishment? editThe Darfur Sultanate: A History (O'Fahey, 2008) looks like our best source by far, if anyone can access it it'd improve the article a lot Kowal2701 (talk) 21:16, 3 March 2025 (UTC)

editHi, Kowal2701
While the source may be dated, that alone doesn’t justify reverting the edit. The article currently lacks comprehensive sourcing, and this historical work, despite its age offers valuable information about the dynasty. Unless more recent and equally reliable sources are available to support or replace it, I believe it should remain. --Ozan33Ankara (talk) 10:17, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- As I said in my edit summary, please read WP:CSA and WP:AGEMATTERS. There are plenty of recent scholarly sources about Darfur. Kowal2701 (talk) 10:19, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Please don’t use colonial-era sources for African history, they are not WP:RS. If you’re unsure about a source, take it to WP:RSN. Kowal2701 (talk) 10:31, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- You know this is published by Oxford University, right? That’s a strong WP:RS. This article lacks sufficient sources, so we should be able to use this. If certain views are outdated by newer scholarly work, they can be updated or removed. But completely dismissing this journal isn’t the right approach in my opinion. --Ozan33Ankara (talk) 10:43, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- It is nearly a century old. Scholarship of the 1920s is nowhere near the quality of modern scholarship. Not only that, but what you used it for directly contradicts what recent sources say. If you’re still unconvinced, start a discussion at WP:RSN, but it is very obviously unusable to me. You can use Google Scholar and Google Books to find recent sources, the best source is the one in the above section that I can’t access. Kowal2701 (talk) 10:50, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- A lot of the uncited content in this article does appear to come from recent RSs. If you want, you can paste bits into google and try to find the original source and add the citation Kowal2701 (talk) 11:21, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
