Dependence vs Addiction
editI was looking for information specifically on the physical dependence caused by opioids. This article starts out explaining the difference between physical dependence and addiction, but an awful lot of the article talks about addiction rather than dependence. Seems like either the title should be expanded to "Substance dependence and addiction" or the information on addiction should be removed or moved to the articles on Addiction. - There are so many different articles on drug addiction but I can't figure them out. They seem to dance around the concept that people take drugs, get hooked on them, and have difficulty — either because they won't stop or can't. Possibly this is due to a desire to be "non-judgmental".
- I'd like to cut through the mumbo-jumbo and make articles more straightforward: where there is consensus, say what the general idea is, but if there is controversy, describe each side without endorsing any of them. --Uncle Ed (talk) 19:58, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- The addiction content should be removed (sans the contrasting explainer in the lead), considering that we already have an addiction article and this article is in fact substance dependence, which is an entirely distinct pathological state with unique biomolecular mechanisms. The management section in particular needs some serious work for that reason, glossing over the fact that virtually the entire lead of that section is uncited. I have a number of off-wiki deadlines to meet, but I will try and get around to rewriting at some point because it's a massive contradiction of the article's scope and there are evidence-based interventions for managing substance dependence.
