Incorrect use of "Macedonian" – request for correction
editHello,
I would like to point out an important issue in this article. The player is described as a “Macedonian footballer,” which is not in line with the 2018 Prespa Agreement signed between Greece and North Macedonia.
According to the agreement: - The proper name of the country is “North Macedonia.” - The internationally accepted term is “citizen of North Macedonia” or “North Macedonian.”
The term “Macedonian” on its own is politically sensitive and misleading, especially since it can refer to the Greek region of Macedonia. This goes against the neutrality principles of Wikipedia and international naming standards.
I kindly request that the article be updated accordingly.
Thank you. Konstantinos89 (talk) 11:47, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- We follow MOS:MAC, not the Prespa agreement. There is currently community consensus to refer to citizens of North Macedonia as such. You should take any concerns you have on the guideline's talk page. StephenMacky1 (talk) 11:52, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Aside from this, Konstantinos89 also happens to be mistaken about the contents of the Prespa agreement itself. The agreement in fact does provide for the nationality to be called "Macedonian" (or, in the full official phrase as printed in passports: "Macedonian/citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia", but that is of course not something we could use naturally in running text). It certainly doesn't provide for the nationality to be called "North Macedonian". Our WP:MOSMAC guideline happens to be quite aligned with the Prespa agreement in this respect. - Yeah. Since there are editors who appear to be unaware about this guideline, perhaps there should be a notice about it on talk pages of articles, with relation to North Macedonia obviously. We might need to still remind them, but it could have an effect. StephenMacky1 (talk) 12:46, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
