The news

edit

Some readers may wonder why I deleted certain sections of this article. Wikipedia isn't a newspaper and it isn't Facebook. It isn't television. It isn't the place to go for the latest thing. It isn't the place to read about gossip or celebrity scandal. It's an encyclopedia, which means a boring reliance on facts. Facebook cannot be used as a source for Wikipedia. No site that has user-generated content can be a reliable source for Wikipedia, and this includes Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, iTunes, Discogs.com, Musicbrainz, RateYourMusic, Soundcloud, blogs, forums, retail sites, and any site whose purpose is to sell rather than to record facts. Even if the sources are appropriate, Wikipedia isn't the place to post "A new album is coming next month" or "the band said they plan to record a new album" or "the band might go on tour next year". It is not a travel log, a tour book, or a diary. One doesn't "post" to Wikipedia the way one posts to Facebook or a forum or a chat room. One can write or edit Wikipedia, provided one knows the rules.

Change in bassist

edit

As noted under Roy Babbington, he has now retired. Current bassist is Steve Thelonious Baker I observed this personally at Ronnie Scott’s! GeofffDennis (talk) 10:58, 21 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Too much detail and unencyclopedic.

Especially the section on the original line-up suffers from a lack of suitable references. We can't really use any fansites for these. Then lines like 'This made them instant darlings of the Parisian "in" crowd, resulting in invitations to appear on television shows and at the Paris Biennale in October 1967' are too vague and unencyclopedic. I mean, it would be good to know what notable tv shows and are there any reports on the 1967 Paris performance? Karst (talk) 15:11, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'll try the best I can to tighten up the article and add references where I can. Tbf62 (talk) 16:18, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Triple Echo

edit

The one glaring omission from the list of released albums by Soft Machine is Triple Echo. Unfortunately, a Wiki Policeman with a stiff view of sources (and jazz "hasn't been a popular genre since World War II" - has effectively scotched the possibility that I, an inexperienced editor, can reasonably include it within the article. I have a copy of the original release which includes details of contributing musicians, but that probably doesn't count, and neither do the sources around on- and off-line for the album which are most likely unworthy sources for "An HencyclopediHa".

So, it must suffice that I make note of it here. Released 1977 in the UK. Label: Harvest. A compilation set of three vinyl LPs. Variously Stereo or Mono. Recordings made between 1967 and 1977. Some previously released, some not. Some studio recordings and some live performances, with a wide range of personnel. Perhaps some enterprising soul who can lay hands on verifiable sources will include the album in the article, perhaps at least acknowledging its existence after some 49 years.
