Controversy section deleted by a NSF IP address?

edit

Interesting and presumably inappropriate that the Controversy section of this article was removed in an edit from an NSF IP address, with no discussion in talk page. See edit history here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sethuraman_Panchanathan&diff=next&oldid=1272359632 Unless someone has a reason why this change shouldn't be reverted, I'll be doing that shortly. I agree, please restore! If a pattern emerges, we might need to request some level of protection. Joannamasel (talk) 22:21, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Really the information about his wife is needed????

edit

To be honest, I checked the previous NSF director, and her husband is just mentioned. Really we need to know if his wife if moving to DC "to keep the family together?". REALLY? What if not? Does it provide any useful information?

I would remove it and leave it as is.  Preceding unsigned comment added by Leocadio blanco (talkcontribs) 18:53, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Leocadio blanco: Is it really important for anyone to know where his wife works and the names of his two children, especially when all 3 of them are notable enough to warrant their own WP articles? It is my opinion that Wikipedia biography articles of living people that contain the name of possibly non-notable minor children is kind of creepy since publishing such information would be only useful to stalkers. Unless you disagree, I will remove place of work for spouse and children names. -- 96.64.134.61 (talk) 00:00, 1 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

leocadio.blanco here: I did not write the biography - I removed a note commenting about if his wife was going to follow to keep the family together that I found utterly inappropriate. I would say that who is his wife/what does she do might be of common interest, and it is commonly added to previous NSF directors wikis. But not the names of the children of course - but I cannot see those indicated?  Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.17.215.194 (talk) 15:15, 7 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

October 2025 rewrite

edit

I'm a paid editor with Arizona State University and am presenting a rewrite proposal which currently lives at User:Melted Brie/Panch. It makes many improvements to the article, too numerous to use {{text diff}} without hitting post-expand include size, including:

  • Better explanation of his early research career
  • More information on Panch's tenure at NSF
  • Updated, streamlined list of honors and awards
  • Removal of a subsection of Controversies pertaining to unsubstantiated claims in a lawsuit
  • Copyediting

Note: Mind posting these one edit at a time? Likeanechointheforest (talk) 21:48, 25 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Likeanechointheforest See User:Melted Brie/Panch/Diff, which covers everything but the awards header. (Code on that page is stripped of references to avoid PEIS issues.) Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 21:59, 25 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I just mean here! Easier to keep track of for everyone involved! Likeanechointheforest (talk) 15:32, 26 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Likeanechointheforest The main reason it is not is, again, post-expand include size. There are enough changes that, with other content on this page, it might not all display. Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 05:59, 27 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
So you're saying what you want changed is on the the user page? If so, I'll review it, say my opinion, and implement it to conclude this edit request. MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 22:29, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MosquitoDestroyer Correct, that's the article as I'm proposing it (of course with the categories commented out). Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 22:32, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
That diff looks awesome, most definitely an edit request I'd implement, however, I have (and only) one question, where are the references/sources? MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 22:43, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MosquitoDestroyer They are omitted from the diff page for page size reasons, but you can look at User:Melted Brie/Panch which contains all the citation information. Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 22:47, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
References seem legit, I will implement this request. Please wait while I do so. MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 22:51, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you—glad to see this finally looked at after 11 weeks! Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 22:53, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I'm just trying to clear out this 247+ COI edit request backlog, for some reason, everyone does every other type, not 1 soul does COI. MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 22:57, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
When you say, "This section is removed. The NSF items are merged into the NSF section. The ASU item is removed.", do you mean remove the entire controversies section or move the NSF and ASU controversies each respectively into their sections of the article? MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 23:22, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MosquitoDestroyer The new article has no controversy section. The ASU controversy was removed from the article—the lawsuit went to summary judgment and did not get substantial (non-State Press) external coverage. The NSF controversy is in the NSF section. Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 23:23, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, forgot the article was even updated, ok, gonna continue implementing your request. MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 23:25, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I meant that I removed it in my changes. The new article text is designed to be a copy-and-paste of everything except the categories. Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 23:32, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Took almost (if not more) 2 hours, but it's done.....sighs :) MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 00:42, 8 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you @MosquitoDestroyer! Unfortunately, it looks riddled with errors and is missing a fair number of the improvements I made in the draft.
  • The sentence Panchanathan served as one of ASU's representatives during the creation of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. has lost its ref. It instead has {citation needed|reason=Previous reference was never defined (i.e. cited a reliable source)} tagged to it.
  • Panchanathan led the formation and 2022 launch of the Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP) This paragraph should be re-copied from my draft. It has some citations out of place.
  • I notice a lot of ref citation syntax improvements weren't included.
Could you just re-copy what is in the draft? Also, do you think the {{BLP primary sources}} tag is still needed? Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 04:27, 10 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, well at the time I'm reading this (12:38 AM, UTC-5) I am ready to go sleep and I won't be on Wikipedia much of the day tomorrow until 10-45 minutes after sunset. So after sunset we can talk it out ok? MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 05:40, 10 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
You around now to take another look @MosquitoDestroyer? I just see stuff I did that didn't make it, including reference improvements and archiving. Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 18:52, 11 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am, so what seems to be the issue? MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 20:09, 11 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MosquitoDestroyer It's that the method in which you implemented the edit request caused new syntax errors (some of which I had to fix), ignored most of the improved citations and archiving, and did not even touch the Awards, appointments and fellowships section. Could you just, please, copy over everything that's in User:Melted Brie/Panch into this page? That page had no errors and was designed to be copied over cleanly. If you can't do that, I'm going to have to reopen this edit request and have another user look at it. Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 00:25, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just copy and paste? ok MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 00:43, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done. MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 00:44, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MosquitoDestroyer Thank you. For the record, you probably won't get very many complete articles at this quality when looking at COI edit requests. I've been there (on the other side). Melted BrieASU (onward to victory · t · c) 03:55, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Melted Brie No problem, just working day by day to help make Wikipedia a better place for all. Even if it's going through 250+ requests, I'm not the only person here. MosquitoDestroyer (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 04:19, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
