New York Ban on PS???
editI live in NY. Polystyrene is all over the place. How is it banned? Longinus876 (talk) 16:25, 6 October 2022 (UTC)
- The ban on polystyrene use in New York became effective on January 1, 2022, so I imagine that it's still being worked out of distribution. Polystyrene isn't just going to disappear from New York immediately...or ever. Born of Iron (talk) 17:14, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Australia has not banned polystyrene
editThe article and map say that Australia has totally banned it. That's not true. The claim in the article is based on a source (of which there are several similar from that time) which is all about an announcement from the federal government of the time saying they were going to ban it by the middle of 2022. By the middle of 2022, that government had lost power in a federal election. The ban hasn't happened, as can easily seen from Goggling "polystyrene australia banned". That search will also show that, as in the USA, the authority to ban such a product largely falls to the state governments. That means there are some partial bans implemented by states, but it's a fragmented situation which I'm not sure I can be bothered sorting through and documenting.
The current claim needs to be removed from the article. I can remove it from the table, but I don't know what to do with the map. HiLo48 (talk) 08:49, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
The title of this page is quite misleading or the article is misleading
editA ban on single use plastics is not a ban on EPS. Most of these bans are no a ban on PS, but a ban on any single use plastics for certain things such as take away, which just happen to include EPS
And almost none of ( I am not sure if any, because I didn't look at every law / link ) are actually bans on EPS, but bans of certain uses of EPS. It would be one thing if they were bans of EPS with some exceptions, but they don't even seem to be that, just bans of single use hard to recycle plastics from a very certain limited consumer facing use such as take away Seraphya (talk) 12:25, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- I'm confused by what you are actually saying or objecting to, but for example, in the state of Maryland there is a law that specifically outlaws EPS for most purposes even through there isn't a law generally banning single use plastics (EG, MD grocery stores still have plastic bags depending on the jurisdiction). With the exception of egg cartons, almost no products in MD are sold with EPS, either on the shelf like EPS cups/plates or deli takeout containers. Yes, the ban specifically targets EPS. If a general law against single use plastics includes a ban on EPS, we can add a note or info explaining this. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 16:45, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- In Maine, the law also targets EPS with some exceptions for meat, seafood and eggs. I could go on, but yes, many jurisdictions specifically target EPS. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 16:47, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
