Updating NYSCA champion
edit@MaxBrowne2: What is the issue with the edit by Chessy12? I don't see how WP:UNDUE is a problem in naming the current champion of a chess association. (We also do that at United States Chess Federation.) It is awkward that someone must update it every year, but readers want to know that sort of thing. Moreover, if there were a problem with it, an edit to update the name from 2022 to 2024 wouldn't make bring you any closer to, or farther from, solving that problem. - I'll admit my edit was related to my current dispute over the article William Graif, which I don't think should exist. He won the title due to the vagaries of the Swiss system, and the fact that the actual tournament winners were not from New York State, and he didn't beat anyone rated over 2150. Meaning, the achievement sounds more impressive than it actually is. If you have a look at my recent edit history at WP:COIN you'll get the idea. Basically this guy is trying to use Wikipedia for self-promotion. MaxBrowne2 (talk) 13:36, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
- I see what you mean -- it is reasonable to conclude that Chessy12 is indeed William Graif, and so that whole article is just a "vanity Wikipedia article". In case you didn't know, Charles Hertan and Jessica Lauser, articles about people with whom I am acquainted, have the same character. Then there's that article that you and I both looked at, Jack Mizzi. It's an ugly phenomenon, but I don't know what constructive steps one can take. People don't realize what a laughingstock they become when they put up something like this.
- I would rather that this dispute would not bleed over to New York State Chess Association. But in the fall, there will be a new state champion, and the problem will presumably solve itself. Bruce leverett (talk) 15:11, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
- I remember we deleted the article on Bulgarian IM Valery Lilov on exactly these grounds. MaxBrowne2 (talk) 16:45, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
