Significant update to Nathan Adler (restoration of standing and addressing source bias)
editI have recently updated the article for Rabbi Nathan Adler to provide a more comprehensive and nuanced account of his relationship with the Frankfurt communal authorities.
Key updates include:
Formal Restoration of Standing: Added details regarding the amendment of the Pinkas HaKahal (communal ledger) just prior to Adler's death, which nullified previous threats of excommunication. This is a crucial historical detail that shifts the narrative from one of permanent pariah status to one of communal reconciliation.
The "Great Eagle" Honorific: I have added a section explaining the significance of the epithet HaNesher HaGadol on his tombstone. While linguistically a play on his name (Adler), its status as a tribute traditionally reserved for Maimonides serves as historical evidence of the high regard in which he was held by the Frankfurt rabbinate at the end of his life.
Addressing Source Bias: I have added a section re-evaluating the 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia entry. As noted in the article, that entry was written from a specific early-Reform perspective that often viewed kabbalistic and ascetic Orthodox practices through a critical lens. I have provided the necessary cultural and religious context (such as the nature of his guardianship of the Chatam Sofer and the practice of ascetic fasting) to ensure a Neutral Point of View (NPOV).
References used:

I believe these changes bring the article into better alignment with modern historical scholarship and provide a more objective view of Adler’s legacy. Moishe Zykhmych (talk) 11:28, 29 December 2025 (UTC)
