Matvei Safonov → Matvey Safonov – This seems to be the more commonly-used spelling of his first name. NY Times/Athletic, Goal, among others. Some other sources also use Matvei Safonov. Please tell me if I'm wrong or if this move is correct. Paul Vaurie (talk) 10:10, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

"Best in the world"
editRecently it has been added a few times to the lead that Safonov is regarded as one of the best keepers in the world; this is not accurate on several points. In the actual article provided, he is ranked sixteenth, behind the likes of Sunderland's Robin Roefs. Being the sixteenth best at anything is not particularly notable; perhaps if he was in the top ten this would be a notable aspect (and indeed if it was top seven, let alone five, there would be little doubt he could be considered one of the best) but this is nowhere high enough.
Secondly, in terms of being "regarded" as such, most of the sources detailing the best keepers in the world don't even mention him. He doesn't feature on SI's list of the top 25, nor FourFourTwo's list of the top 20, or PlanetFootball's newly updated list from today of the top 10.
Perhaps if sources upgrade him and start listing him consistently much higher than this, it'll be worth including, but for now the sourcing simply doesn't back it. — ser! (chat to me - see my edits) 23:43, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
