Furbybrain, re this edit - this was, IIRC, when all the London-based newspapers quit Fleet Street for Wapping and other East London locations. Many of them had also had offices and printing works in Manchester - the Daily Mirror, for example, was on the eastern corner of the junction where Withy Grove meets Corporation Street, very close to Exchange station (and slightly closer to Victoria); The Guardian was on Deansgate, also convenient for Exchange.
