Should this article even exist?

edit

I apologize if people have already fought about whether this article should even exist or not. After reading the entirety of this article, I was so disturbed that I could not sleep well. I feel this material should at a minimum have a warning box at the top: WARNING: DREADFUL DETAIL BELOW. Given that all these facts exist online somewhere in news media, should there actually be an encyclopedia article about it? Should we have articles like this in Wikipedia that a twelve-year-old could reasonably stumble upon while reading about, say, Iraq? I read the entire Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia when I was a kid and there was nothing in it to compare with the graphically horrifying imagery in this article. This was a crime, not a war atrocity like the Mai Lai Massacre. The one redeeming thing about this story is the courage of the soldier who came forward, risking his life, to let the truth be known.Harborsparrow (talk) 20:09, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

While I empathize with the feelings of disgust that this historical event inspire, it is still a notable historical event and an important detail in the history of American-Iraqi relations and the events of the American-Iraq War and subsequent conflicts. As such, it belongs on Wikipedia, and generally Wikipedia allows readers to decide for themselves which articles they feel comfortable reading. AScanner (talk) 11:16, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes it is indeed quite disturbing but, I'd like to remind you that Wikipedia is an encylopedia and represents what happened, most importantly Wikipedia is uncensored as seen in Wikipedia:Uncensored. Mr.DetectiveMan (talk) 19:28, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Interesting Reference on Chain of command performance

Updating status of convicts.

edit

I just finished reading Black Hearts by Jim Frederick and wanted to update the status of the men convicted of the crimes. They appear to have been paroled, but I cannot find a source documenting that, so the best I can do is cite the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator that they are not in BOP custody. I also revised Steven Green's death date to align with what the BOP site says. Fideo (talk) 21:21, 3 May 2025 (UTC) Also, the BOP inmate locator lists Paul E. Cortez, age 42, as NOT IN BOP CUSTODY. The edit that said he was transferred to an unknown state prison has no citation supporting it, and I cannot find any source supporting it, so I have removed it. If someone knows this to be true and can cite support for it, that would support the accuracy of the article.Reply

Inconsistency

edit

the page mentions that there were five perpetrators and lists five names convinced in relation to the crime. The info box lists four names though and says four perpetrators. Is there a reason Howard isn't included in the data box? ~2026-14547-60 (talk) 02:44, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Mahmudiyah rape and killingsMahmudiyah rape and murders – The perpetrators were convicted of murder, so WP:MURDER suggests using the word "murder" in the title. The article text already calls the killings "murder", only the title doesn't use that word. cathartid - talk 06:03, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Support per nom. Also, conviction & sentence parameters in infobox (see usage in Murder of George Floyd) would be useful. Baltalı İlah (talk) 12:16, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Support. The renaming is warranted. Brozozo (talk) 13:35, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Support since this is what sources describe the killings as. Just using "killing" is fine in unclear cases, but we have a very clear case here. Cortador (talk) 15:28, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Support per nomination Northern-Virginia-Photographer (talk) 16:13, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Support per nom, "killing" can be a misdirection. All four soldiers were found guilty of murder, and the article itself uses the word "murder" at least 26 times. Altorespite 🌿 17:28, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Support per nomination. Article makes it clear that this was murder. NewishIdeas (talk) 17:30, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Support They were convicted of murder and the article includes info detailing the intentional killing and murder of this poor family. There's no doubt, and as of now, no objections either, to the change of title that better fits the case. ScottyNolan (talk) 13:31, 13 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is Black Hearts reliable?

edit

If there was a book made on the crime, then this should be cited (usually books are considered more reliable than an equivalent newspaper/article). Sahib-e-Qiran, EasternShah 20:48, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
