Is it Macbeath or MacBeath?
editThe page is currently titled "MacBeath" and it uses that spelling most places. But it uses "Macbeath" in the Historical note. Also, at least some of the math papers that he published styled his last name as "Macbeath" --- for example:
Do we actually know which capitalization the man preferred? Or maybe he didn't care? Which spelling should current-day mathematicians use when referring to him? LyleRamshaw (talk) 02:57, 2 December 2025 (UTC)
- The sources appear inconsistent. The obituary in The Times consistently uses MacBeath; the one in The Scotsman switches between both. The one in the LMS Newsletter appears to mainly use Macbeath, as does The Glasgow Herald. Helpfully, the publication of his from which this surface is named lists his name as A. M. MACBEATH. Both MathSciNet and zbMATH (which both vary author names to match individual publications rather than normalizing them across all publications of the same author, I think) list this one as by "Macbeath, A. M.". So, I don't know, but I think it makes sense to match the capitalization of our article on him, which currently uses MacBeath. —David Eppstein (talk) 05:41, 2 December 2025 (UTC)
