incorrect attribution of "based on"
editThe following statement in the article is incorrect: "Zimbalist's character, as well as Katy Kurtzman's, were based on real-life sisters Irene and Joan Ferrara, who were severely injured in the accident." Joan Ferrara did indeed have a leg amputated as the result of the March 24, 1972 bus/train crash, but Zimbalist's charater is actually based on the other young woman who lost a leg as a result of the accident, Mary Jane LiPuma. Like the character played by Mike Connors, LiPuma's father, confronted by the fact that Nyack Hospital didn't have a vascular specialist, insisted that his daughter be flown by helicopter to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, where such a specialist could be found. That specialist, like the specialist in the film, did all he could but was unable to save LiPuma's leg. Like Zimbalist's character, LiPuma also had some brain damage, but she exhibited remarkable resilience and managed to graduate from Nyack High School and build a career in which she helped other amputees survive and thrive. ~2026-12850-01 (talk) 23:09, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
