editHi! Yeah I spent quite a while thinking about putting this one live, I wasn't entirely sure. I feel as though the surprisingly substantial coverage he received as a SPAD to Gill and others within UKIP, which combining with his candidacy should be enough. WP:Politician does not require an office for 'major local political figures' which I would argue his increasing relevance and his party's overall takeoff would make him. But I won't be torn up if it ends up being deleted, I get it. If the general consensus is that I jumped the gun, I'd just ask it gets pulled back as a draft so it can get stuck up either after the by-election or after the 2026 election, where it seems currently inevitable he'll be elected. - I think given how much Llŷr Powell has become part of the discourse in Wales and given that he's almost certain to be elected either later this month or in may it only makes sense for his page to be up. Nunus99 (talk) 08:38, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Flatthew, I think this is a really well-written page, just that it is currently not the time for it. I think moving it to draftspace would be most appropriate, and following it up after the by-election to determine whether it gets moved to mainspace.
I would make the argument that the references break down to the following: 8 sources directly related to his candidacy in Caerphilly (which is too bound to the by-election to be notable beyond that page I believe), 3 sources which do not or only in passing mention Powell, 3 sources (ITV, BBC and Nation.Cymru) which do have substantial coverage but with Powell as not the primary focus of the articles (they focus on the organisation, or those around him, rather than the man himself). Ideally, for an article like this, extended coverage specifically around the individual should be present, which does not seem to be the case beyond the Caerphilly instances.
Regards, Quinby (talk) 09:19, 7 October 2025 (UTC)- Yeah I understand. I would argue that those sources have Powell as the primary focus - in a very literal way, every single one of their headlines is talking about him, and while the articles discuss the implications of things occurring with him, the articles do keep coming back to him as the thread, across several distinct eventualities. I also think there could be something to the coverage of his work on establishing that think tank he co-founded, the Centre for Welsh Studies, that also received quite a lot of coverage, but again that's not directly him. I hadn't got to doing that yet because I wanted to do it Properly, but there is certainly a good chunk of coverage on that, although he seems to have disconnected from it quite quickly.
- But I agree it's quite marginal. I'm fine with it being moved back, I just wanted to give it a shot and open the discussion on that a little bit. Particularly with Welsh political figures I find it hard to feel out the line because the underlying media environment is so lacking. Flatthew (talk) 10:01, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
- It certainly is, I do wonder if he were an English political figure if there would even need any discussion in this regard. Quinby (talk) 10:03, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
