Peer review
editHi KJP1, hope you're keeping well. After happening across this Birmingham list, I put together a list for Manchester pubs and was wondering if you'd be able to peer‑review it when you have a moment? I chose not to use the set template from the Grade II* listed buildings article because I couldn't omit the "Type" column, and since this list is exclusively pubs, it didn't seem appropriate to include it. I'm also intending to create articles for those I've red-linked. Best regards. Mmberney (talk) 20:46, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
- Mmberney - to be honest, the last months irl have been pretty damn awful. But that's all the more reason to pick up a distraction. And Listed pubs in Manchester I may have drunk in is certainly that. I'll take a look. KJP1 (talk) 21:04, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to hear you've had such a rough stretch. Having something small and absorbing to focus on can make a real difference (it certainly has in my case) and digging into the history of old Manchester pubs is a pretty solid distraction. There's something grounding about places that have just stayed put while everything else shifts. I hope the list gives you a bit of breathing room, and I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of it. Mmberney (talk) 08:07, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Not forgotten this. One immediate thought - definite article or not? We currently have a mix. Red Lion, The Star and Garter. But when they are otherwise single words, City, Plough? And personally, I’d drop “former” even though that may be the listing title. KJP1 (talk) 08:31, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
- Good point; I'll amend those entries that are not otherwise single words and omit "Former" from the names. Thanks. Mmberney (talk) 08:40, 10 April 2026 (UTC)

Comments from KJP1
editOverall, I think this is looking good. Some comments, some focussed on the FLC criteria: KJP1 (talk) 07:13, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- Hi KJP1, once again I much appreciate your in-depth review. Here are my responses:
- 3(b) - I don't have copies of Pevsner; are these available free online anywhere legitimate, for future reference?
- They sometimes come up with a lot of the text on Google Books. I’m lucky enough to have the set, so if you ever need anything, just shout and I’ll mail the extract over. They are extraordinarily good for building articles. I’ll go through tomorrow and fillet anything good. KJP1 (talk) 17:13, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- 5(b) - There were no decent images on Commons for The Unicorn, so I used it as an excuse to head into town last week and take one, as well as update a few of the others.
- 5(c) - Alt text has now been added for every image.
- The City - It appears to be permanently closed, so I've mentioned that in the notes and added the CAMRA reference.
- The Bank - I've added the name of its architect and noted that it was the first of its style in the city.
- Briton's Protection - Added a citation from the MEN.
- The Churchill - Not a typo; both the website and the signage outside the venue state that it is now The Church.
- New Union - I've amended the notes to a (hopefully) source‑safe revision.
- Crown and Kettle - Thanks for the spot; interestingly, an MEN article mentions a 1989 fire, but the notes have been amended in line with CAMRA.
- Memorial Hall - Added the architect.

- Criteria
- 3(a) Comprehensiveness - You have coverage for every item.
- 3(b) Sourcing - unless you beat me to it, I'll see whether any are mentioned in Pevsner. We have two, the Lancashire: Manchester volume, and Hartwell's Manchester. If any are mentioned, I think they'd be worth including for completeness.
- 4 Structure- all nice and sortable.
- 5(b) Media - You've images for every item which is nice.
- 5(c) Accessibility - The images will need alt text.
- Individual entries
- The City, Oldham Street - sorry to see this is now closed (per CAMRA), as it was one of my favourites. Is its demise worth mentioning?
- The Bank - Worth mentioning as Manchester's first Greek Revival building? It'll certainly be in Pevsner.
- Briton's Protection - Does either source mention the supposed Peterloo connection described in the Notes? I can't see it.
- The Churchill - is it really now trading as "The Church", or is it a typo?
- New Union - The origin of the name is puzzling, and the sources don't really explain it. HE doesn't say anything, while the second source, which looks a bit bloggy for an RS, mentions it but isn't clear. The Commonwealth was a 20th century creation, not mid-19th. Is it connected to the Canadian Confederation? Might need another source here.
- Crown and Kettle - Notes say closed after a fire, CAMRA says after a fight.
- Memorial Hall - worth mentioning it's by Thomas Worthington? He was arguably Manchester's most important home-grown Victorian architect.
- @Mmberney: can you withdraw this since you've nomimated it for FLC? Olliefant (she/her) 23:44, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

Mmberney - So, there's a fair bit:
- Old Wellington Inn - The efforts to preserve the Old Wellington, "when more important Manchester buildings have disappeared without a trace, ... illustrate an enduring 20th century love affair with timber framing". (Hartwell, p=234)
- The City - "A good late 19th century timber front with carved pilasters and fanlights". (Hartwell, p=225)
- Circus Tavern - "an almost miraculous survival, considering the tiny scale of it all". (Hartwell, p=193)
- Hare and Hounds - "a remarkably complete interwar interior". (Hartwell, p=242)
- The Bank - "Manchester's earliest Greek Revival building". (Hartwell, p=174)
- Memorial Hall - "by Thomas Worthington. Venetian Gothic with ranges of traceried windows". (Hartwell, p=142)
- Marble Arch - "the only one of the pubs in the area with architectural pretensions". (Hartwell, p=291)

- I'll now take a look at the Pevsner, to see if there's anything else worth gleaning. KJP1 (talk) 22:06, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

- Star and Garter - "Queen Anne style". (Hartwell/Hyde/Pevsner, p=313)
There's really nothing else which isn't in the Hartwell. Hope they may be of some use. I would use both, purely for completeness in Sourcing. KJP1 (talk) 09:52, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- Many thanks for listing all of those - do you think it would be better to include some of the quotations within the Notes, or to add them all as "|quote=" within the references themselves? Mmberney (talk) 13:14, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- If it were me, I’d sprinkle a few into the Notes. KJP1 (talk) 18:24, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- I've done just that :) Not sure how to formally close the PR now so will leave it to the experts. Once again, thank you for the collaboration! Mmberney (talk) 22:22, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
