New Longest Reigning Monarch?

I recently discovered this guy who apparently reigned between sometime in 1912 to 6 March 2001. This is about 89 years. I’m not sure about about the start date but the end date seems legitimate. Until a source for his exact start date is found he’ll probably stay in the third list. Should he be included? https://web.archive.org/web/20180817011629/http://members.iinet.net.au/~royalty/states/nepal/bhirkot.html S302921 (talk) 18:49, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

Also even if they lost full powers, Nepal Monarchies still effectively continued to exist until 2008. Here's another source https://myrepublica.nagariknetwork.com/news/remembering-rishikesh-shaha-a-great-nepali-diplomat-of-all-time/ Please give me thoughts on this and i will add him. S302921 (talk) 18:52, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

We need the name of the monarchs & what sovereign state they reigned over. GoodDay (talk) 19:06, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
I don’t think his state was sovereign as it seemed subordinate to the Kingdom of Nepal. But his name seems to have been Raja Tarak Bahadur Shah GoodDay. S302921 (talk) 19:12, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
He doesn't belong in the first section, then. GoodDay (talk) 19:12, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
Neither the second section since i couldn't find his exact start date but i do know it was sometime in 1912. Even a lower estimate would still place it way ahead of both Sobhuza II and Louis XIV. S302921 (talk) 19:14, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
With all of that should he be included? I am gonna let a few more editors decide before including him. S302921 (talk) 19:17, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
He doesn't belong in the top two sections. Louis XIV is still the longest reigned monarch of sovereign state. GoodDay (talk) 19:19, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

Who would be next?

I did a brief search to find out who the next monarchs on the first list would be. If you know of any other monarch with a longer reign than those mentioned, you can add him.

Amazing although what about Thutmose III and Nguyễn Hoàng. Also weren't Savoy and Tuscany apart of the Holy Roman Empire. S302921 (talk) 07:40, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the comment. I will add Thutmose III. As for Nguyễn Hoàng, it appears that he was a feudal lord within the Lê Dynasty.
Italian states ceased to be part of the HRE at the Peace of Westphalia, in 1648. But thank you for Thutmose III.There are many Egyptian pharaohs, have I missed more? 177.91.168.2 (talk) 09:15, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
Also that about the subjects of photos i found photos for a couple monarchs online. I'm not sure if these are alk fulky reliable sources but still then.

Is the King of Spain Charles III, who ruled Spain for 29 years, and before that was the King of Naples and Sicily for another 25 years, considered? Андрій ЯЧ (talk) 23:20, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
Андрій ЯЧ No, because his reign was over completely separate states, unlike somebody like Ferdinand III who still ruled over Sicily for about 65 years. S302921 (talk) 14:49, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

About Edit Warring

User:GoodDay User:Remsense since this is a literal list about LONGEST Reigns i feel like it would be best to add a monarch's longest reign so IMO Qianlong Emperor's de-facto reign should be counted. It is already for Maeda Tsunanori and Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa in the Second Table. I also don't see a valid reason to remove the Monaco Note. 77.101.238.210 (talk) 21:14, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

I'll wait for Remsense to respond. My concern was stopping the back-and-forth editing. GoodDay (talk) 21:17, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
My concern is exactly the same, but unfortunately there's not much ability on my part to prevent disruption when the criteria just ain't that well defined. Maybe I should just take pages like these off my watchlist. Remsense   22:49, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
Then after all of this, would it be fine if i add back my edit? 77.101.238.210 (talk) 22:56, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
No, because you have no source that would make clear the Qianlong Emperor is being treated consistently with other figures listed. Remsense   22:58, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
User:Remsense it clearly states on his page about that fact "He reigned officially from 1735 until his abdication in 1796, but retained ultimate power subsequently until his death in 1799". 77.101.238.210 (talk) 08:13, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
Best to go with the reign (1735 to 1796) dates. GoodDay (talk) 16:52, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
User:GoodDay Then what about Maeda Tsunanori and Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa who have their de-facto periods of reign counted in the second table? Also this is a list about the LONGEST REIGNS so it is best to include his de-facto period of rule. 77.101.238.210 (talk) 17:42, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
See Remsense' reasons for why your changes shouldn't be accepted. GoodDay (talk) 17:46, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
His reason is that I need a source, when it is literally listed on his very page that he abdicated in 1796 but maintained power until 1799. 77.101.238.210 (talk) 15:15, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
I still think that he should be listed with his 63 year reign instead. 77.101.238.210 (talk) 16:04, 1 March 2025 (UTC)

Updating image for Louis XIV

I propose changing the image of Louis XIV of France to Pierre Mingard after Louis XIV in armour. I plan to that because the current image for that guy on the page looks boring and the image of what I plan changing to is in only one page in the English Wikipedia records of heads of state. 2001:8003:162C:A500:3963:4F6C:FC8C:FA0 (talk) 19:27, 4 March 2025 (UTC)

At the same time, why would users disagree with image changing without consensus? 2001:8003:162C:A500:9082:952F:DE25:280 (talk) 10:59, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah

"The following are the 25 longest-reigning monarchs of states who were internationally recognised as sovereign for most or all of their reign" For most or all of their reign While Bolkiah rule since october 1967 to 1984 around 16 years under British protection as at the time Brunei status as British protectorate not colony similar to Tonga Til now he reign for 57 years Which means 16 years under protection and 41 years as independent ruler. Is this cannot be considered as "for most of their reign" at all? If cann't please just erase the wording for most of their reign to only all their reign 114.10.143.19 (talk) 15:43, 3 April 2025 (UTC)

Revello and Senonches

It is stated these were states in Holy Roman Empire but they are not on this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_states_in_the_Holy_Roman_Empire Miloradovan (talk) 18:26, 18 May 2025 (UTC)

They do seem to be much smaller entities, hence why they might have been overlooked in the list. 77.101.238.210 (talk) 12:44, 5 August 2025 (UTC)

Basil II and Constantine VIII of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire)

The preface mentioning why Basil and Constantine are not on the list is misleading and incorrect.

Basil and Constantine were the sons of Emperor Romanos II, who died prematurely. Since Romanos II was part of the Macedonian dynasty, and had many living relatives who were deeply tied to the leadership of the Roman State, his children (porphyrogennetoi, mind you) were always considered by the populace as the true bearers of the scepter during their lifetimes (see their coins for additional evidence), as well as the reasons for why Empresses Zoe and Theodora (daughters of Constantine VIII) could similarly not be easily removed from the imperial orbit, and were in fact invited back when the populace became disgruntled with Roman leadership in the 1050s. As such, Basil and Constantine could not be removed without significantly dismantling the Roman state's very dynastic fabric. Every Emperor that reigned in their stead (Nikephoros II, and John I) knew that they were operating with their power "on lease" as Lord Protector of Basil and Constantine's rule. Marrying Theophano (Basil and Constantine's mother) was both a political matter to secure their "borrowed" reigns (and perhaps a perk, since she was reputed to be both beautiful and intelligent).

Anyways, my argument is that Basil and Constantine should be on the list. I don't see how they're any different than Louis XIV or any other similar child-emperor that had regents or other "guardians" protecting their unquestioned right to rule. The Romans just had a different way of maintaining that, since they had a long, long history of co-rulership (see Tetrarchy). Not even ambitious and great generals like Nikephoros Phokas and John Tzmiskes dared to unseat two young emperors (and purple-born) of a well-established and successful dynasty.

I believe they were removed a few years back since it was agreed that the title Junior-Emperor, was simply that, a title. (See Henry the Young King for detail, although I am uncertain if English titles were comparable to Roman titles) S302921 (talk) 06:13, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
