A certain Abel Guides or Guidez (Communist?) was allegedly credited with shooting down 10 Francoist aircrafts when flying in André Malraux's international Escuadrilla España (Spain Squadron) early in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). The source for Guides's tally-ho seems to be the Soviet war correspondent Mikhail Koltsov, so that it might be an overclaiming. Together with Auguste Amestoy he founded in November 1936 the air company Air Pyrénées, endowed by the Republican authorities, for instance the Basque Government. They flew non-military planes from Biarritz to Bilbao, at the time Republican-held and isolated. Sources are at variance, but Guides was shot down and killed on 7 or 8 September 1937 over Gijón or over the Bay of Biscay off Ribadesella when flying a British-made twin-engined light airliner Airspeed Envoy(French civilian plate F-AQCS). He fell victim to 3 Francoist German Heinkel He-51s.
