Shouldn't "Punk rock and Hardcore" and "Metal and related" be merged with the rock/pop main list? You can specify what genre it is by writing it after the name of the band (e.g. Skank, pop/reggae/ska band). 200.174.47.180 18:08, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Major Expansion and Genre Reorganization

edit

I made a broad expansion and reorganization of this list.

The main goals were to improve coverage across the range of Brazilian music, add missing musicians and musical groups that already have English Wikipedia articles, and make the genre organization easier to navigate.

Before this pass, the list had a much smaller set of broad sections.

The expanded version adds or separates several genres and traditions that were previously missing, underrepresented, or buried inside larger categories.

Major structural changes included:

  • expanding and reorganizing existing sections such as Classical music, Choro, Bossa nova, Forró, Frevo, Mangue beat, Jazz, Pop music, Sertanejo, Electronic, Rock, Experimental music, Funk, Brazilian hip hop and rap, Christian and gospel music, Soundtrack, Axé music and others;
  • splitting Música popular brasileira and Tropicalismo into separate sections;
  • adding new genre sections for Pagode, Metal, Baião, Maracatu, Reggae and ska, Opera, Brega, cafona and romantic popular music, Jovem Guarda, Soul and R&B, Rockabilly and Comedy music;
  • adding several folk and regional categories, including Afro-Brazilian music, Caipira music, Capoeira music, Lambada, Maxixe, Seresta, Gaucho music, Festa junina and quadrilha music, and Côco;
  • adding birth and death years where readily available from the linked English Wikipedia articles;
  • keeping descriptions short and list-appropriate;
  • improving alphabetical order within sections;
  • correcting some redirects, disambiguation issues and article-title problems encountered during cleanup.

NOTE:

  • The general inclusion principle I followed was to add musicians or groups that already have English Wikipedia articles and whose linked articles support placement in the relevant genre or musical tradition.
  • Because Brazilian musicians often cross genres, some overlap between sections is unavoidable.
  • Since the list includes living people, short factual descriptions should be kept conservative and easy to verify.
