Alaskan native peoples do not refer to themselves as Inuit, but as Yupik or Eskimos. Therefore, all references to "Inuit" has been changed to "Eskimos". 173.32.113.72 (talk) 23:09, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, the Inupiat won't usually get upset if you call them "Inuit" (they're closely related in both language and culture to the Canadian Inuit), but Yupik people are not Inuit. Calling them that is not just wrong, but offensive. They don't even speak the same language. The languages are related, but so are (for example) Spanish and French.
Suppose a Yupik person decided that calling white people "gussaq" was offensive (which it is), and decided from now on all white people would be called "French".
Would the English, Spanish, Italians... like it? (hint: no)
Would it be wrong? (hint: yes)
Would trying to tell other people what they should be called be incredibly arrogant? (hint: yes). 206.162.55.80 (talk) 03:13, 2 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Inuit = all Eskimo languages speaking people

The page List of American Inuit is for Alaskan Eskimo peoples (Yupik peoples and Inupiat people or Alaskan Inuit peoples). The equivalent "Inuit = Eskimo" is not neutral and scientific. --Kmoksy (talk) 09:48, 9 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
