Category:Language regulators
editAre there any Language regulators like Kanak Language Academy?--Kaiyr (talk) 22:17, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
- No, there isn't. -- Womtelo (talk) 09:47, 13 February 2017 (UTC).
Languages of Solomon Islands
editThis article only describes the language of the country "Solomon Islands", and does not mention the languages of the archipelago (e.g. in Bougainville). Let's move the article to "Languages of the Solomon Islands" to be in line with the other articles "Languages of..." which relate to the countries? --Hanzlan (talk) 16:50, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
- I agree. This should be about the country. -- Womtelo (talk) 00:13, 8 December 2023 (UTC).
- No objection to this, actually it's a good idea, but this article does cover Bougainville, which, of course, is part of PNG and the Bougainville languages are not covered in Languages of Papua New Guinea, so we'd have to sort that first. Also, the boundary between PNG and Solomons is a colonial creation that never reflected the cultures of the area. The south of Bougainville and the Shortlands/Choiseul areas of Solomons share the same culture and language across what has become an arbitrary border. If changed, it should move to Languages of Solomon Islands rather than Languages of the Solomon Islands of course but let's fix the new areas first, I'll leave that to others because I don't know too much about the languages in Bougainville or PNG. - Languages of the Solomon Islands archipelago → Languages of the Solomon Islands
- List of earthquakes in the Solomon Islands archipelago → List of earthquakes in the Solomon Islands
- List of mammals of the Solomon Islands archipelago → List of mammals of the Solomon Islands
– While the distinction between the country and the archipelago is sometimes relevant, it's not particularly useful in these titles, which are precise enough without it since there are not articles on each. The articles already clarify their scope. It looks like these were moved without discussion to the less concise titles in 2019, and now there's an RM at Talk:Solomon Islands (archipelago) proposing some contortions to go along with this scheme, which we're better off without. - hi, I fully agree. (Writing this, right while listening to a conference talk on the languages of the Solomon Islands!). -- Womtelo (talk) 06:05, 27 June 2025 (UTC).
- This may be useful for now, although I suspect that in a few years political changes may see some or all of these articles split in two. CMD (talk) 07:47, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Comment Most people won't spot the differences between "the Solomon Islands" (archipelago, with the definite article) and "Solomon Islands" (country, without the definite article). I reckon that the main article Solomon Islands (archipelago) has set a good precedent which we should follow. My counter-proposal is as follows:
- Languages of the Solomon Islands archipelago → Languages of the Solomon Islands (archipelago)
- List of earthquakes in the Solomon Islands archipelago → List of earthquakes in the Solomon Islands (archipelago)
- List of mammals of the Solomon Islands archipelago → List of mammals of the Solomon Islands (archipelago)

- That's what we usually call "unnecessary disambiguation". If we had separate articles "in the Solomon Islands (country)", then we'd do this, but we don't, so we don't need to got that far, which is the point of this RM. And languages, earthquakes, and mammals don't respect country boundaries, so there's not really any need to distinguish. Dicklyon (talk) 14:50, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
