Headsup: does he become cardinal priest?
editAs was the case with Cardinal Sepe, he'd assume cardinal-priest rank immediately, because he is becoming a diocesan ordinary? Carlm0405 (talk) 17:15, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
- Unfortunately you cannot rely upon the WP entry for Crescenzio Sepe. That says that upon being named archbishop of Naples "he became a Cardinal-Priest with his deaconry elevated pro hac vice to title." But the citation does not document that change. It's silent on the subject. [1] His official Vatican bio makes no mention of his change from cardinal deacon to cardinal priest, though such info is normally included in these bios.[2]
- Catholic Hierarchy says he became a cardinal priest the day he was appointed to Naples. There's no documentation, of course. I don't consider that a sufficient source. Others may differ.
- Salvatore Miranda says: "Named metropolitan archbishop of Naples, May 20, 2006; he was automatically elevated to cardinal priest, with his deaconry being elevated pro hac vice to title." I'd trust him to know, but I'd still look for a proper announcement. A change in the status of the deaconry merits an announcement, no? Rutsq (talk) 01:59, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
