Cleaning up past mistakes

I am Kevin Royal Johnson. I would like to address any issues that resulted in the banner at the top of the page. I used the account Royalbooks in the past, but I understand that name is problematic, and I understand the issues around conflict of interest. I would like to do what I can to fix the article, and I hope it's possible to remove the banner at the top of the article after making such improvements. Dannyosage (talk) 03:49, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

I'd like to do what is needed to bring this article into better compliance with Wikipedia's standards. I think everyone would agree it's better to have a decent article without a banner than one with problems and a banner. But since I'm the subject of the article, and there are legitimate concerns about my role in shaping the page, I know I need to take a light touch. In the past, I did make a number of changes to the article; they were all made in good faith, but I didn't understand Wikipedia very well, and looking back on them, I agree they need to be adjusted. So, here is my list. Maybe an uninvolved Wikipedia editor can take a look and see if they agree.

• Author section, first paragraph: "the first book ever written on the subject of film scripts from a rare book and curatorial perspective" This is a strong claim. I am confident it is true, but since it's not sourced to a specific review, maybe it should be removed or softened.
• Author section, first paragraph: "...will be published…" should be changed to "...was published..."
• Musical Career section, second paragraph: remove the following sentence. (It's all true, but it hardly seems worth noting.) "During this time, Johnson shared the stage with numerous singer-songwriters, both with The Linemen and as a solo artist, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Warren Zevon, Steve Earle, Ricky Skaggs, Dave Matthews, Marshall Crenshaw, Jesse Winchester, Dave Alvin, Matthew Sweet, Alex Chilton, Iris DeMent, Alejandro Escovedo, Peter Holsapple, Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Buckner and many others."
• Musical Career, third paragraph: Remove the characterization of various collaborators: "later known for his work with Dave Matthews, Liz Phair, and John Mayer" and "co-founder of Dischord Records and drummer for Minor Threat"
• Musical Career, fifth paragraph: Remove entire paragraph. Not necessary to list people I have shared a stage with. (Note, this will remove several footnotes, but these are not highly relevant footnotes for this article to begin with.)

2. Additional changes were also made.
3. With regards to the maintenance template, it is recommended that, as a courtesy, you first try asking the editor who assigned the template — in this case MB — in order to find out from them if it can be removed. Since they placed the template, they are in the best position to know whether or not the issues which caused its placement have been corrected. @Spintendo: Thank you for your careful consideration, and the edits based on my request. It all looks good; I'd just note the following. None of these are "mission critical" but I think they would all make for a more accurate/readable article.

1. You added a "citation needed" banner to the "Early Life" section. I don't think that's been covered in independent sources, but it's also pretty straightforward stuff. I'd suggest either citing it to my staff profile at Royal Books, or else just deleting it.
2. You introduced the sentence: "In 2001 Johnson started a book business in Baltimore." That's not quite accurate, I had started the business in 1998, as mentioned previously; ideally that should be changed to say I moved the business into a more permanent location at that later date.
3. Now that much detail has been removed from the "Author" section, in my view the article would be more coherent by removing the "Critical Reception" heading, and moving that content into the "Author" section. That would more closely parallel the "Musical Career" section, and result in a less disjointed article overall.

@MB: Thank you for your removing the banner. It looks like you might have made a small error; according to your edit summary, it looks like you meant to acknowledge the edits made by @Spintendo:, but your actual edit seems to have reverted to the version prior to your original tag. Could you take a look and make sure this is right?

My suggestions above still stand, as well, if either of you has time to review. Regardless, I think Spintendo's edits did a good job of removing my less-than-ideal earlier edits, and I appreciate your assistance in fixing any problems I introduced previously. -Dannyosage (talk) 19:26, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
