Sourced expansion: structure, removal of unsourced valuation, added references

edit

Hi all,

I plan (or have just made) a sourced expansion of the article, adding sections: Early life, Career, Subjects & Style, Notable works/Collections, Personal life, Legacy, plus standardized references. All new factual statements are cited to standard published references (Mitchell 1985; Wood 1995; Benezit; Royal Academy catalogues; National Galleries of Scotland entries).

Changes vs prior version:

* Replaced vague “was an English artist” lead with concise summary of subject focus (sporting / canine & equine painting) – all sourced.

* Added proper citations for birth context (approx. 1843/44), exhibition record (RA 1866 onward), Lyndhurst move, signature form (“Jno Emms”).

* Added context for *Callum* (Dandie Dinmont Terrier) and the James Cowan Smith bequest (using National Galleries of Scotland sources).

* Removed unsourced promotional language and the fluctuating valuation figure (per WP:V, WP:NOR, WP:NOTPRICE, WP:WEASEL).

* Structured content to improve readability and verifiability, without original research or interpretive analysis beyond cited sources.

If any source choice seems weak or a better citation exists (e.g. additional scholarly monograph), please flag it—I’m happy to refine. I avoided auction-price claims to keep the page stable.

Unless there are objections, I’ll leave the expanded structure in place; minor copyedits of course welcome.

Thanks!
